i just got some maps from lakeshorelearning.com . they're just basic world and U.S. maps. i put one on the wall above her school area, and one above her bed where she spends a lot of time looking at books. we refer to them all the time. i want to get her a globe next, but we just went overboard on school stuff last week so i need to wait a while. LOL. they're just regular maps that i took to work and laminated. dd is six and going into first grade.

We invested in a quality, raised relief 16" floor globe this Christmas that we just love.

The LeapFrog Smart Globe Explorer is fun for children (and adults), but Amazon's price is too high, it's half off here.

Last month we got a dry-erase globe that we write on for history/geography lessons. It's pretty cool.

For maps, at this age, we got this colorful, laminated Rand McNally World map and U.S. map.

A World Map Shower Curtain is educational for the whole family!

If I didn't have such textured walls, I would get this huge wall mural map:

I found globes that cheap best. The more willing they are to touch it the more they are willing to learn. I love the globe ball.

I love that shower curtain!

I just bought two wall maps, a world map and us map at target in the school section for $5 each. They are folded up and bagged to about a 4x6" package.

I just got a big, posterboard US map at Dollar Tree. For the quality, you wouldn't think it only cost a dollar!

As long as whatever you buy is touchable and can be read easily, then you can't go wrong. I don't think there is a "best" map or globe, the important thing is just to HAVE them and use them
I got a cheap globe at a thrift store and it's been handled so much over the last 4 yrs that it's finally time for a new one. But for only $5, I didn't care that it was being hauled around all the time-that's what it was meant for.
So I might not get the cheapest one out there, but I wouldn't get a super expensive one either.
We have an inflatable one (like a beach ball) that gets used a lot too and can be used for games like "hot potato" but you have to point out a country first before handing it off.

My girls love to do "Geopuzzles" with me (their ages are 5 and 2!) ... we have the Geopuzzle for Europe and the one for Asia. It is a lot of fun, very hands-on, and helps children learn where the countries are!

Just google "geopuzzles" or check out a site like this:
