He asked what one did with the fish net, and I told him I thought it was for helping to get the placenta out of the water. He said he'd heard a lot of good stories in sporting goods, but I had him speechless with that one. Then I mentioned this on my FB profile, and my former childbirth teacher who is also a waterbirth lover, said it's actually used to get the poop out of the water! Imagine if I'd told the Wal-Mart guy that!

That story just cracked me up. But, um yea.

Another "earthbirther" here -- fun to see that there are so many of us! I never could figure out why I'm not attracted to the idea of a waterbirth, I think the idea of setting up a pool in my house stresses me out... Anyway, 3 births on solid ground and I'm still wondering if I'll regret not having a tub if I end up with a long labor, or back labor... oh well!

I was of the earth-birthing persuasion too and did not want a water birth.
In fact, I had very few requests for my baby's birth and this was one of them- in the event that I would labor in water, please get me out when it is time for the baby to be born.
Of course as with all things birth-related, we could never predict what would happen and I did end up having a waterbirth.

Another earthbirther here too
This is baby number 5 but my first (hopefully) homebirth!
With all my others I like to be fairly still and quiet and not sitting on anything ball, bottom of tub etc.. We are building an earthen home with an earthen floor which will be done enough to move in in a few months..and can't wait for my earthbirth

I had my first as a waterbirth, but for my second, I just didn't want it.
I always say I had my first "at sea" and my second "on land", so if I have a third, I'll have to have an air birth in a helicopter or something.

I feel the same way! I can't explain why, but the idea of giving birth in the water does not appeal to me At ALL! I wouldn't mind laboring in a deep tub, but I'm far too lazy to go through the hassle of renting and filling up a birth tub!

I can definitely see why certain people are attracted to waterbirth, but it wasn't for me personally. I felt too confined in one place, just sitting in a tub. I needed to move/sway/walk constantly in labor to deal and the tub just felt like a trap!

I enjoy laboring through transition in the water, but for all three of my births, I was incredibly drawn to the bed to give birth...even when that meant holding my daughter's head in while I walked!

Was there something you didn't like about the first experience? I can understand how it might not appeal to someone in the first place, but I'm curious if someone actively wanted waterbirth and then decided they didn't like it, what changed her mind?

FWIW I've never given birth so I don't have any experience of my own. We're thinking about TTC and the thought of a waterbirth really appeals to me. I want to know if there are downsides I haven't considered.

I'm another earth birther. I like to labour in the bath, but when it's time to push i like to feel solid ground beneath me, and yeah, i can't be bothered getting out and drying off and all that hassle. i had dd1 on the bed and dd2 on knees next to the bed. I'm another one who can feel suffocated in a warm bath.

My first was a water birth but I wasn't able to get into the tub until the very end, so I was only in the water to push her out which lasted about 5-10 minutes. With my last birth I had a birth tub at home that I labored in for about an hour during the hard stuff. I went through transition in the tub and I just couldn't get comfortable. Nothing felt right. The baby didn't feel to be coming down. I was WAY too hot in there. At one point I decided to get out and sit on the toilet to regroup for a minute. Once I was out and on the toilet there was no way I was getting back in. I felt so much more grounded there. My yells turned into lower grunts and moans. I felt more in control and on top of things. Needless to say he was born on land (on my bathroom floor about 10 minutes after getting on the toilet).

I DO like water for relaxation and I love swimming and baths, so I just assumed I wanted a waterbirth. Next time, though I'll have it available but it won't be my only plan. I now understand the need and desire to be earth bound.
