My husband went to the dr yesterday for an extremely painful, hot, red, swollen area on his leg, and the dr diagnosed phlebitis. My husband has varicose veins in that area on his leg, a small patch of veins, about 1"x2" or so, he's had them for years. I quickly googled phlebitis, and it sounds similar to what he has. The swelling, redness, and pain was streaking down his leg, so the dr gave him an antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory (naproxen), and a pain reliever (he's not taking that, it's not that bad, and the naproxen is helping with the pain). Today his leg is already starting to feel better.

BUT...my husband is only 29. When I hear phlebitis, I think of an old grandma, not a young man!

What would cause it for my husband? I have my suspicions...he's rather overweight (5'10" and 275), he's not that active (although he's been trying to make more of an effort recently, but his effort see-saws with his weight), he eats like crap (even if I cook healthy meals-which he does eat-he'll just go get fastfood late at night or something like that). But is that enough? Is there some other risk factor that led to this?

Do we need to worry about this recurring? Are there serious side effects from it? Is there any connection between phlebitis on a surface vessel and thrombophlebitis (which is obviously very scary)?
