Helpful hints for mushroom growing?

Hi, my son is all of a sudden into all things mushrooms, and wants to grow some. I have done a lot of reading and am almost ready to buy some supplies. He wants to grow shiitakes on a log, and I also want to get him a faster growing home kit so he can see results sooner. There are tons of kits out there and I'm not sure what to get.

I have the blackest of all black thumbs, basically anything I plant or try to grow anywhere dies immediately, and I'd hate to disappoint him. Has anyone grown mushrooms with success? I was thinking of one of these: http://www.easygrowmushrooms.com/shiitake.shtml

And one of these: http://www.oystercreekmushroom.com/order.html shiitake growing kit at the bottom of the page.

And does anyone know if beeswax can be used in place of canning wax to seal the holes? I have some beeswax already and don't know if I need to order canning wax like it says.

Any other tips for maximizing the chances of this working?

OOOooooo growing mushrooms! I have never done that before, I should give it a go.

For the canning vs. beeswax thing
I don't see why not, they are similar and its not like the mushrooms are going to get super hot I assume where the plug is. But I could be wrong on that.
