today is my first day using cloth diapers. i do not want the sprayer for the toilet and would not like to have to use the flushable bio liners. how else can i get the solids off the diaper? my little guy is 10 months so he's past the breastmilk poops.

We used the 'swish stick' that came with the gDiapers that were gifted to us (we don't use the gDiapers now, just the stick)

If we didn't have the stick I think I'd use an old spatula or something. Sometimes I can just dump the poo out, but sometimes I do need to scrape.

What kind of CDs are you using? We use FuzziBunz pockets, and really I don't worry about getting ALL the poop off. My DD is almost 10 mos, too, so when she poops, I take the diaper to the toilet and kind of turn it inside out and give it a couple of shakes until the solids fall into the toilet. Whatever is left can just be rinsed out in the washing machine. Just make sure you do a COLD Pre-Wash with no detergent before doing the actual Hot/Cold wash cycle WITH detergent. That pre-wash will get all the pee and poop out of the diapers so you aren't just washing your dipes in it all.

I don't. If it is a chunk and will fall off then I shake it off but otherwise the washing machines gets it out.

i saw this in new posts and was wondering this myself, but actually-i can't imagine it will be much different when my 3 month old starts solids in some months time. breastfeeding unfortunately didn't work out for us and he is formula fed, i just throw the whole diaper in the washer, do a cold rinse with no detergent, then a hot wash, then 1 or 2 straight rinses and they have always come out perfectly.

Any big chunks that didn't shake off too easily I would use some toilet paper to help peel it off.

I had the same question a few weeks ago when I started using cloth on my toddler. I took the suggestion from someone to buy a yard of micro fleece or microchamois cloth and cut it up into liners, so I use those over my bamboo inserts (we are using Applecheeks and Weehuggers) and the poop kind of peels off. Sometimes if it needs a little help, another suggestion from someone was to use a spray bottle (a poor woman's diaper sprayer) and both my husband and I find that the micro chamois liner + sprayer is all wee need.

With our MF pockets, we just turned them a litte inside out and shook it off-- but there was definitely a period there with just SOME solids where it was pretty gooey. I used an old spatula and sometimes TP for a while. But the machine always got it out any way. So I'd say see if that works for now, and the poo should get much more able to just roll off before too long.

thanks everyone! we are using prefolds and fuzzi bunz. last night i had him in a disposable cause i'm still not sure how wet he can get in a CD without leaking and i wasn't looking forward to waking up in a wet bed. wouldn't you know, he made a stinky this morning that would have just fallen off!

I just wanted to comment briefly on the "wetting and leaking" concern. My DD co-sleeps with us in our bed, and with the FuzziBunz she has slept up to 8 hours in them (with a hemp doubler) without leaking. I try to change her every 5 or 6 hours though, because when she does wake up after an 8 hour stretch, her diaper is just saturated and I can't imagine how uncomfortable that would be to wake up with all that pee stuck to you! I've seen some mamas say that they leave their LOs in their diapers for up to 12 hours!! I just don't think I could do that. Just my opinion!

I actually hold the diaper over the toilet and what ever doesn't shake off I use my detachable shower head to spray off into the toilet.

Couple Things

I have dipped the dirty part of the diaper in the toilet and flushed.

I have used flushable liners that I just dropped into the toilet.

I have left the diaper to dry and then shaken the poop off.

I have just shaken the poop off and the rest went through the wash.

What works best depends on the natural of the poop.
