Thinking about Back to School Already! (clothing)

And my daughter is only in pre-school. But, we're in Chicago where the days can change by 30 degrees in the same 24 hour period. So, I've got to think about the fact that the weather can be drastically different in just 45 days or less.

And, I've been getting better at not going overboard. So, I just want a few special, useful items for her. That I plan to make. She needs the standard hat, mittens, coat, rain gear and slippers. We're covered on rain gear and I think I found a WAHM to make her coat (since we have 2 brand new ones from last year that did not get worn since she didn't like them - they were gifts from family) and this way, I'll be certain she loves it and won't fuss about wearing it. She's given me an entire scene she wants on her slippers - I had to talk her down to two items - a blue butterfly and a bumblebee - which I'll needle felt assuming this attempt at sewing works out.

Last year I knit her a balaclava, in a hideous colorway (for this project) of her choosing, so, not sure if I'll be doing anything else for head gear. And she can still wear her felted mittens (pattern from Living Crafts) - although I dream of making her thrummed mittens!

To keep her body warm, I'm considering Neighborly and the Ridinghood Babydoll Sweater. And I'd love it if I could eek out an Oriental Lily for her, although she may still be able to wear the one I made two years ago as a dress as it may fit as a tunic, now. And I'd love to knit Paper Dolls, but now, I know I'm in dream land and I'd have to choose as I know I won't be getting 4 sweaters knit. But it would be special!

And, of course, I have to knit about 3-5 pair of longies for the boy. Oy.

What are you mamas working on for Back to School?

Oh goodness me too! But I have only been able to think about it. I've been too sick to sew or knit and we are flat broke so I can't buy any supplies anyways Maybe next year!! Gotta always think positive! My daughter loves her neighborly. I knit mine a lot longer than suggested so it will fit longer.

We are *finally* doing the parent/child class this year, yay! DD1 already has wool long johns, so that is a big thing off the list. I just asked my mom to buy her wellies (rain boots) from Target, so we got those today. Already have a raincoat (she and I both). I splurged on a precious winter pea coat from Gymboree (used some of my birthday money & it will fit for at least two years). My mom buys all of my kids' clothes for us & we just went winter shopping on Saturday. Got a new knitted hat & I am knitting her another one. I'm not sure if her gloves from last year fit, but I need new fingerless wool gloves w/out a flap. I will buy those, though; I'm not that skilled at knitting yet She might need new snow boots & def needs snow pants. I'm thinking of getting track pants to put over her regular pants. That is what I wore when I got older & it is much easier than taking off reg pants & putting on snow pants. She also needs a couple of new sweaters including one that has a hood & is a pull-on (not button-up). Again, need to buy as I cannot knit that.

DD2 has a wool onesie & a nice snowsuit, so she is covered.

Nicole, you made that hat and gloves set!

Yay, I want to hear all about your class when you start
My MIL bought my daughter's raincoat, rain pants and boots for us so we were very lucky with that

And hey, yeah, you're right! So I did make something.. hee,hee

Oh I'm jealous of your girls!!! Clothes are the only thing these days that makes me wish for a girl. Any fun boy/gender neutral projects? Not that I have any free time but a girl can dream!!!

My biggest thing is to try and keep away from character clothes. I don't mind a picture now and then, but keeping away from Spiderman and Buzz Lightyear and Batman, etc etc (a couple Spiderman shirts slipped in and they're crazy favorites). DS is in a little Montessori school so he's been educated by his peers about super heros and things boys do and like (which sadly no longer includes playing princess or his favorite pink flower cup unless we're at home--although fairies in general still seem to be on the ok list!).

I keep his wardrobe pretty small since he leads a jeans and t-shirt kind of life and grows faster than I can keep up with. But I'd love to see a suggestion for a special project.

Thankfully, we're good to go with outdoor gear--last year's snow pants and coat ought to fit. The rain boots are nice and big. And it doesn't rain enough here to justify full-on rain-gear. I think we'll need snow-boots by Thanksgiving. That should be it.

How about a cute hat with dinosour scales for winter? Or a hooded sweater like that with the scales going down the arms (I think). There are also a lot of nice vest patterns out there. Of course, I'm assuming you knit! If these are of interest, I'll find the links.

My little guy isn't in school yet. In fact he's still in diapers, so, he's getting knit longies and a recycled wool sleep sack and maybe Tomten jacket.

Oh he'd love dinosaur anything! He won't wear vests unfortunately--insists on removing them as soon as he comes inside. I can knit decently. It would be good to have a project...we're about to leave for a week in the woods! So excited! But it will be quiet...just me and DS, so a knitting project would be PERFECT. I'll take any links you've got! Oooh, and I forgot...I've got a knit cap pattern I could try again...it came out too small last time I tried it and I got busy and didn't ever try it again.

Ok, here's the hat.

Happy knitting!

OH! I love the sweater! It might turn into a Christmas present with my schedule, but he'll flip! He's super into dinos and SUPER into dress up of any kind. This is little boy perfect!! Thanks so much!!

Now...I'll have to challenge myself to actually complete the project.

Happy to help!

On another note, I just added this to my queue - obviously having to bump something! It's just way too cute not to knit! Teacher's Pet

And, I scored a test spot for this sweater. Looks like my niece will get the riding hoodie and dd will get this sweater.

So CUTE! I'm choking a little at how much yarn the cardigan calls for. Can you tell I only knit small items? Maybe I should make it HUGE so it fits him forever. After all...this is the 3.5 yr old I just skipped 4Ts for because he grew so dang much over the summer!!! We're going right to 5T once shorts season is over!

I've got two boys and yearn to make cute girly clothes too!

I have been working on some super cute hoodies kind of like these on etsy but made from XXL thrifted cotton sweatshirts. They're much cuter than regular boy clothes - I made really pointy hoods and appliques of mushrooms, squirrel, tree, etc. And cost about $2-3 each!

Oh my goodness so cute!!! I officially don't have time, but I'll definitely add those to my favorites to come back to if I'm ever bored (HAHAHAHAHA!). First, I should probably finish making my summer skirts before it's winter.

What a fabulous idea! Oddly enough, I think I'll get to be more creative like this in dressing ds since dd became very particular as early as 3.5.

I started the steggie cardigan last night! DS loves the pics. And I clearly need to knit more...I was such a spaz and completely misread the instructions. But good to go now! I have a vacation project! And I saw a really adorable idea on ravelry...someone lined it in dino-print flannel!

I'm stashing the CUTE applique ideas for next year. This is all I can handle for now!!

ps. There was princess dress up last night. He found a pretty shimmery embroidered Indian throw in my closet and transformed into a sparkly princess. I love my baby boy!

I'll try to take pics soon. I just used a regular sewing pattern (McCalls 4644) but repurposed old sweatshirts for the fabric and made the hood longer and more pointy. if you're clever in laying it out, you won't have to sew hems for the body or sleeves since you use the ones from the original sweatshirt. Then I used fabric scraps to make simple appliques.

I am working on a Neighborly. Made one last year...but got SO many stains on it, that its time for a new one. Making this one in a darker purple color (which was the color of most of the stains...I am getting wiser ).

I finished a hat and am still working on the mittens to match.

The only other thing I really want to make soon is a bag for all of her extra clothes at school.

Then I have a sweater or two on the list as it gets chillier.

We lucked up at Land's End getting wet and warm weather gear. The clearance section is huge now. So I'd suggest checking that out if you need wet/warm stuff for winter outdoor play. Which we specifically needed...waterproof jacket with hood, waterproof pants, etc.
