Desperately want to stop dreaming

I used to love dreaming. I could have lucid dreams and really enjoyed every night.

Now, in my third trimester with my 4th child, my constant dreaming is really interfering with my life. Every night, all night, terrible/intense/vivid dreams. I cannot stop nor control them. Interfering with my waking hours. This didn't happen with any of my previous pregnancies.

I remember when I was in college that there was a certain plant that stopped dreams... but that is obviously not an option now. I am at my wit's end.

Try a protein snack right before bed. There is some evidence that crazy dreams are caused by a spike in adreneline when your blood sugar goes low while you are sleeping. You don't recognize you need a snack because you are asleep, so your body compensates. But, since you are sleeping, there's nowhere for that adreneline to go...and it manifests itself in a crazy dream.

Thanks, I will! This is the first new bit of info I've heard! I do wake up starving every night at 3 or 4 a.m.

I don't know what your spiritual beliefs are, but if you pray or meditate, do it immediately before bed. That is the absolute only thing that has helped me alleviate those horrific pregnancy dreams. If you don't, give yourself some sort of relaxing ritual every night before laying down and try to make your evenings as routine as possible. Think of the advice that you'd get if your child were having night terrors...there's not always anything you can do, but a more solid routine can help. You could soak your feet in warm water with essential oils for 10-15 minutes, take a long soak in the tub, have a mug of tea and sit outside (if it's not too muggy and nasty where you live), journal, whatever. Something calming before bed might make your subconscious chill out a bit.

You aren't alone.

I keep hoping that using relaxation techniques before bed will help...

I am going through the same thing. I wake up so tired, because I feel like I am waking every hour due to disturbing dreams.....all night long!! Last nights dreams were the worst!!! I do eat protein snack before bed and have tried everything...nothing is working. I am sorry you are going through this. It sucks!

Last night was better. I had 1/2 PB&J before bed with milk, and then yogurt with granola. I feel a bit heartburny, but I only remember one dream, and it was fairly pleasant. My MW suggested catnip tincture. I have yet to try that.

My first impulse would be to look for a homeopathic remedy. But when I looked it up in my first aid book, it basically says dreams are something that need to be dealt with by a professional homeopath, as it is part of a deeper issue. If you can find a classical homeopath in your area, I'd highly recommend getting constitutional treatment while pregnant. When I have bouts of insomnia, that is a pretty clear indication I need to take another dose of my constitutional remedy, and then I'm able to sleep again. Constitutional treatment while pregnant will also help baby to get the best start healthwise.

Just wanted to throw it out there as an option to try.

I had some very strange dreams while pregnant with my first child, but it was the first few months AFTER he was born that I had some very horrific, terrifying dreams. I heard that drinking too much water before bed could cause nightmares... just another idea to throw out there.

I am only 8 week along and am having terrible dreams, too! I normally sleep like a log and do not remember anything... well not anymore! Woke up crying because of my terrible dream (and hormones). For me, eating lots of dairy before bed makes it WORSE, so I try and stay away from that.

I've been stuffing my face before bed and it has gotten better.
