Uh-oh... what could this be?

Yesterday my husband came down with an illness VERY abruptly. He left for work as usual at 7am, running for three miles. He has a great run, felt fine before, during, and afterward. At 10am he took a walk to the grocery store, picked up some sliced ham and cheese, went back to work, and ate it. Half an hour after eating the ham, about 11am, he suddenly felt really queasy. Around noon he called me to come get him, and by 12:30pm he was vomiting A LOT and having severe diarrhea.

He vomited and had diarrhea pretty much constantly for five hours. Poor guy! He felt awful and nauseated, and generally icky. By 6pm the vomiting stopped, but he still felt awful. He had a fever, but not a super high.

He woke up this morning feeling a little better and went out and got breakfast while I was asleep. (Um... what?) By the time he got home he was feeling horrid again, though he didn't vomit. All day he has had an achy stomach, has been fevery, and now he has broken out in a strange sunburn-like rash all over his trunk, arms, and upper legs. It feels hot, and he says it is a mix of itchy and painful, but mostly painful.

Now, until this rash presented I was thinking it was food poisoning, either caused by the ham or something else. Now that the rash is here I am not so sure. And just now my daughter started complaining that her stomach hurts and that she feels like she might throw up.

Any idea of what this might be? There are no runny noses, coughs, sore throats, or any cold symptoms. And it came out of nowhere....bam...super fast.

Go get them both tested for strep. It hits our house like that.

Eeek! Strep? Even with no sore throat at all?

It was a "fun" night last night. My poor kiddo threw up steadily between 10:30pm and 8:30 am. I lost track of how often, but it must have been well over 30 times. I stayed up the whole night in order to get the barf bowl under her at a moment's notice. Poor little bug. Luckily her vomiting session seems to be over for now.

I am pretty sure that you can get a rash from any viral illness.

I'm a wait it out kind of person so I would hold off going anywhere until everyone is vomit/diarrhea free for 24 hours. Many viruses can present with a rash.

As for your question about strep, yes it can present with no sore throat. I've had it with vomiting and no sore throat before, but I also had a severe headache where I could barely lift my head off the pillow and swollen glands.

Just sounds like a stomach bug to me. Sometimes rashes are present with those viruses, mostly caused by the fever itself. Luckily, it wasnt food poisoning. Those viruses usually hit really fast with no warning. I hope you dont get it!
