rules about food?

DD2 is coming up on a year. She's been eating some solids since six months, but has recently discovered the joys of food. We have several small snacks/meals throughout the day, and she is nursed on demand day & night (she and I cosleep).

The other night she signed asking for snack, in the middle of bedtime routine. Time had elapsed between dinner and bedtime, so I went ahead and took her for a snack. Now we offer a snack right before bed.

Now, tonight, she woke at 5 am (teething), after going to sleep at 8 pm. I don't think she is up for the day, I suspect she will sleep again after an hour. But she is asking for snack.

What would/do you do if your LO asks for solids in the middle of the night?!?!

That has never happened to me with my older son and definitely not yet with my baby, but I would say, "Snacks are for daytime, it's still nighttime, and you can only have milks at nighttime." I won't take my baby out of bed unless we are up for the day (we also cosleep). If she wakes up at 5, she might crawl around on the bed but mostly I keep trying to nurse her back down until at least 6:30, and i do say "It's still nighttime, nighttime is for sleeping." Once we are out of bed, we're up for the day.

I tend to trust my girls if they say they are hungry, whatever time of day or night. I might try to distract once (or twice) by trying to get them back to sleep (or to nurse) but after that I would probably get them something to eat.

I sometimes wake up hungry in the middle of the night for no good reason, so I suppose they might too.
