Once my son was more mobile I could only use unmodified prefolds at night because of the bulk. I had to switch to fitteds or pockets during the day.

Maybe someone has found an easy way to turn them into prefitteds? Those are narrower through the crotch area . . .

Sorry I'm not more help!

Twist

Are you just laying your prefolds in a cover, or are you putting them on with something like a snappi?

There is a fold called the twist, or sometimes the bikini twist. It fits trimmer than other folds, but you need to use pins or a snappi to hold it in place. You basically do a half turn to turn the diaper into an hourglass shape.

It's funny you mention pre-fittteds. At one point, I actually thought about sewing velcro on to my prefolds to do the twist fold without a snappi, but then I started using them mostly for stuffing inside of pockets at night.

Twist Update

I tried it. I think that the twist fold would work without pins or a snappi depending on the size of your prefolds and the type of cover you're using. A small prefold and a bummis cover seems okay on 10 month old DS so far. With my large prefolds I would need to pin it.

The bikini twist should remove some bulk between the legs. And here are a couple of links for turning prefolds into fitteds/pre-fitteds:
