question for BLW parents

We started BLW at 6 months. Dd is now 7.5 months and is ingesting only maybe 1 teaspoon or so of food per day or so. That's just a guess based on holes in pieces of food that we give her.

My question is this: did your dc's bowel movements change when they were still ingesting only a very tiny bit of food? I really didn't expect dd's to, but we have noticed quite a change recently and are trying to figure out why.

Her bm's aren't any more solid, just less frequent, and more...ahem...dramatic. For instance, she used to wake up in the morning and have 2 to 4 dirty diapers in a row before noon and maybe another one or two after noon. Now it's one big poop in the middle of the night that requires her to wake up and fuss about for a while before she can get it out and one more giant one before noon. Both are so big and forceful that they usually leak everywhere, but then that's it for the day.

Just a big change and trying to figure out why! Thanks for your feedback.

Hey there, I don't know what other MDCers are going to say but I noticed a change in DD BMs almost immediately when she started solids. More interesting though was the fact that her "routine" toilet behaviours changed throughout her life too. It probably has something to do with the solids, but also know that as she grows her old routines change and her body starts to work differently. Same goes for sleep patterns, nursing patterns, pooping patterns.

The way I see it, is that she's pooping. And that's what you want. Many kids who start the traditional solids path (rice cereal, mush etc) wind up being really constipated.

Good luck and enjoy the (everchanging) ride!

my babe had ONE BITE of avocado on a whim before we even started solids. the next poop was totally different and smelled like real live human poo.

Yup. Pretty much the very minute he ate one bite of solid food his diapering habits changed. He went from once every 2-3 days to once a day, then after a while back to every other day. His poops are nearly always dramatic anyhow. He doesn't eat all that much food in a sitting and his poops are still fairly breastfed-like, only with bits of food in there.

i noticed this too. he went from pooping regularly after waking once a day to every few days (right now it's about every forth day). it's still slightly solid. we have been practicing EC since he was 3 months and we were really good a catching poop in the toilet until his recent 2 week potty strike (he'll pee but doesn't have the patience to poop, he's running around and playing too much). i hope we get back on track soon, b/c i really dislike cleaning poop out of the diapers. oh and the smell is terrible. his gas has also increased with starting solids.
