Family vacation starts tmrw, cousins got HFM???

Our whole family (us, my brothers, their wives, kids, our mom & aunt) leave tomorrow AM for a week long vacation. We are sharing a house. My sis in laws kids do daycare (not sure that matters or not-but they are always bringing something home) 3 days a week & my nephew had a fever last weekend & then a couple blisters/sores & has been fine all week but then my niece got a fever last night & has a couple small blisters/sores on her feet today. Fever was a 100 a few hours ago.

DD1 & my niece are inseparable so while we can try & quarantine DN, it will be very difficult. My girls have both had colds/allergy type stuff but nothing serious & I am worried about it-especially with our 6 mos old. I guess never having anything too serious come through our house (one bout of rotavirus last year) makes me afraid of the unknown!

Besides nursing her like crazy-which she does anyway-what else? Is HFM horrific? We all paid a fortune to go on vacation together & have been looking fwd to it all summer...

I would hope your SIL would choose to keep her sick kid at home. My older DD had HFM/cossackie a couple months ago (I think she got it at childcare at the Y, where she goes an hour or two a couple times a week while I exercise). She had an on-again, off-again fever for several days accompanied by vomiting (when the fever was up), then was just plain listless for a couple more days. She only had a couple blisters in the back of her throat.

DS1 got it a few years ago (also at childcare at the Y). Luckily he didn't get any of the blisters in his mouth, just on his hands and feet. I wouldn't feel comfortable having my babe exposed to it given how uncomfortable it can make them if they get the blisters in their mouth/throat.

Could you call your SIL and find out if they are still planning on bringing your DN?

this is just horrible...all of us, the whole family, literally saved $ for almost a year to be able to do this together. it is also our 60th bday present to my mom. i don't want them to not be there (we are total BFF type sis in laws & our kids are like siblings) & it would also break my heart to keep our dd1 home & have her miss out on the experience & fun.

maybe it is doable to keep the baby away from all the kids for the week? i could just wear her as much as possible (she is not sitting up or crawling yet). what i don't know is how long it is contagious? if dd1 is exposed, how long before she is safe from passing it on to dd2?

the fact is, we are around a group of 20 kids under 8 years old (family & friends) weekly-my kids could get this or any other virus anytime. sometimes it actually sucks to know about this stuff ahead of time.

i just can't believe this. it's too late to get our $ back & this vacation is such a big deal for all of us. we all had to make some sacrifices to be able to do this & give it to my Mom too.

We got HFM a few years back when DD2 was still a baby, it sucked. We got it from a family who at the very end of the playdate mentioned that her kids had HFM a few days back. Thanks. While it wasn't a horrid illness, the baby did not feel well and basically just cried for days. DD1 refused to walk for about 2 days because her soles of her feet hurt so bad but I never saw any blisters.

I'm sorry that this is coming up now.

((((hugs)))) That is just such awful bad luck. I wouldn't want my baby around it- but we went through an ear infectoin and stomach virus before this babe was even 2 months and it was so upsetting- I am really hyper about sickness now. Sorry!! That totally stinks.io

both spoke to our pediatricians & while they agreed the situation wasn't ideal, in light of the circumstances they both suggested they wait till tmrw night to come (instead of afternoon with rest of us) & time it so the kids are all asleep & don't have contact till saturday am. if she is still sick, they will keep her in their room resting while we are at the beach. then of course no sharing drinks or ice pops etc. and the biggest thing both peds said was to wash hands frequently. and of course no one touches my dd2s toys at all & i wash them frequently.

my ped assistant, who is on the crunchy side, said it sucks but it's one of those things my toddler could bring home from anywhere. she said we could pick it up at the library or store just as easily.

we agreed it is possible, perhaps likely, dd1 ends up with. said i would see something within 4 days or so of exposure. then the real trick will be keeping dd1 away from dd2 once the vacation is over & we are back home.
