New clinginess -- concern?

Hello,
I've gotten such great advice here in the past... thought I'd give this a try.

DD will be 3 soon and she is a sweet and delightful child. No discipline issues, no acting out, etc. Everyone who knows her comments on how well-behaved, sweet, kind that she is. She's not outgoing socially but she isn't totally introverted either.

Recently, she has become very upset when I leave the room. She wants to come with me, stay with me, and sometimes hold my hand. If she can't (i.e., I have to go downstairs for laundry) she screams and cries like the world is ending. I tell her I am coming right back or try to get her involved in something to distract her but it is just getting worse.

There have been no changes in our lives lately and she seems fine in every other respect. I hold her often, read stories, play games, etc. I am definitely an AP-style mother, but should I really have to carry my nearly 3YO downstairs every time I do a load of laundry? Is this just a normal phase or should I be concerned about it developing into something else? How should I handle it? Let her cry and explain things to her, or try to minimize the chance of it happening?

TIA

I find that these types of changes happen everytime my ds1 turnes a new age. He just turned 4 a few weeks ago and after being an incredibly independant child for a couple years he suddenly won't go upstairs/outside/to the bathroom/to the playroom etc. by himself. He is stuck to me like glue.

I betcha it'll pass. Just go with it
