Too much iron?

I'm 17 weeks pregnant now, waiting for the miraculous energy burst of the second trimester because I'm so. freaking. tired.

I've decided to try upping my iron. I'm taking New Chapter prenatals, which contain 18mg daily, and now I've bought Floravit which recommends 10mg twice per day on the bottle. I was thinking I would start by taking just one dose of the Floravit daily, but apparently you're supposed to use it up within four weeks of opening it, and I don't want to waste it.

So my question is, is 38mg of daily iron (minus dietary iron of course) safe for me and the baby?

My mw recommends 40mg per day in a supplement, so you should be fine! I think I took 50mg/day when I was having problems with low iron.

I think with Floravit, you should be fine. There is a rare issue with people not being able to process iron (maybe not rare, but they have problems with iron overload causing hemochromatosis) but I think the way the Floravit is, it's shouldn't be a problem.

Great, thanks for the replies

I was diagnosed as anemic in the 3rd trimester and I'm on 90 mg of Rx Iron plus the 30 mgs in my prenatal. So, 38 sounds very reasonable to me.

Yep, sounds fine! I asked my mw about taking a prenatal AND floravit/floradix and she said that's totally fine because floradix is from food sources and easy for the body to handle.
