How Much Do You ... ?

How much do you shop around? How many stores are you willing to go to?

We shop at Costco, several restaurant supply stores, and of course I read the flyers, and nobody has the best deal on everything. Where do you draw the line?

I shop 3 stores monthly...

the co-op or farmers market for fresh produce
the "chain" grocery store for BOGO deals on everything
the "super store" (Sam's Club) for household products

I shop the co-op weekly for fresh produce, the "chain" 1-2x/month and the "super store" 4x/year.

Are you talking about big-ticket items, or your everyday groceries?

I have tried shopping around for sales, and have decided it's just not worth it. I never saved THAT much money on any particular item, and I always ended up forgetting something because I wanted to wait and see if it was cheaper elsewhere. So now I pretty much limit it to two stores. I go to the Grocery Outlet first to see if there's anything spectacularly cheap, and usually get cereal there, and then go to WinCo, which is consistently cheap enough that I don't worry about what I might have gotten on sale at the other places.

Costco/Sams 1 or the other every 2 weeks
Frys (grocery) every week
Target - based on the ad but at least 1x month for rx
Staples- based on the ad and 'give away'

I visit the "big" no frills type groccery store every week. A few times a month I visit the "farm store" and the two German discount type stores(Aldi and Lidl). There is also a little groccery store near our house that I spend way too much money at buying items that I forgot.

I do my shopping around online first and then go out. I can get flyers to almost everywhere online. I do a sams club trip once a month or so and then hit shaws if they have really good deals, but mostly I hit our local hannaford weekly and call it good.

For other items I shop around online at amazon or the bigger stores and look at reviews ect before buying anything. That also gives me time to decide if I really need it..

I alternate Costo and our regular grocery store (Jewel) on a regular basis. I try to only go to Costco twice a month but sometimes it is more.

For specialty items I'll go to Whole Foods or Fresh Market as needed.

For parties I'll often have to go to Costco, Jewel, Binny's, Party City and one of the specialty stores. About once a year I'll need to add in a restaurant supply store as well.

I stick to two stores mainly. Fred Meyer and a small local chain. I've found that our little store has really good sale prices and it's close, while all the other stores are half an hour away. Fred Meyer, I usually send dh to since it's just down the street from his college. We have to buy certain things there since no other stores carry them.

We shop at our Hy-Vee exclusively for groceries. We go on Friday nights and it is really our "date night". As careful as I try to be, we are both impulse shoppers, so I was never able to go to 3 stores and ONLY pick up the loss leaders. We buy most of our HBA and cleaning items there, too. We try to limit our trips to the discount store to once a month or less.

We do use the farmer's market for produce in the summer. We found Sam's club not to be worth it for just the 2 of us. Our Aldi is in a very inconvenient location, so we don't us it as we should.

Sometimes I shop around and sometimes we're just too busy for all that. In an average month, one or both of us will hit the following stores:

~ Costco
~ local discount store
~ local health food store (small chain)
~ Trader Joe's
~ neighborhood supermarket (giant chain--mostly for things we need right now since it is one mile away and pretty small for a supermarket...it is on the way home or a quick jaunt)

We do it for a combination of reasons and cost/price is one. Every other week, I pick up our CSA from a tiny independent health food store a mile and a half from our house. I try to buy something there at the same time in order to thank the owners for the convenience of this close drop-off point.

Twice a year, one or both of us will make a Smart & Final run. We get paper towels and toilet paper and syrup and baking soda (household cleaning) and vinegar (household cleaning) here (in the opposite order of quantity....LOL). For our area, these items are cheaper here than anywhere else. I'll also pick up tp at the discount store, if they happen to have a recycled brand.

Due to our food ethics, we often don't have to shop for sales because there aren't any on the foods we buy. We buy our meat from a local farmer, once a week at the local organic market, though we're planning to buy a half-a-side of beef when they're available in the fall. I buy most of our animal products through a local co-op, so I pay whatever the price is for cheese, butter, sour cream, cream cheese, or other dairy. Sometimes they do have sales, and in those cases I buy extra and freeze (such as hard cheeses--not spreadable cream cheese because it gets crumbly and sour when frozen).
For produce, we shop the big chain store weekly. We've tried using a CSA in the past, but my kids just can't appreciate heirloom vegetables at the moment and we were wasting too much. Now I just buy what we need at the chain store if I cannot find it at the same market I mentioned last paragraph.
I occasionally will go to another store nearby that sells a lot of organic meat including chicken, beef and pork if I have been unable to find what I needed at a local place, or if time if of the essence.
I also frequent the Big Club Co store to buy basics like diced tomatoes, bread, cereal (organic multigrain flakes almost always).
So I guess that's 4-5 places, but not every week.

I go to 2 stores weekly, 1 store twice a month, and another store once a month. Health Food store on occasion.
