To the mods: I wasn't sure if this belonged in GD or the Education forums... I ended up going with Education. I hope that's O.K.

U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy wants to impose a national ban on paddling in schools

She says paddling, which is legal in at least 20 states, breeds violence

Others say more studies are needed or believe corporal punishment improves behavior

ACLU, Human Rights Watch: 223,190 students were paddled in the 2006-07 school year
As much as it saddens me that we need this legislation, I'm so happy to see it introduced on a national level!

When I first started teaching in 1998, we were still paddling in our school system. I have never paddled a student, but had to witness a student being paddled so I could "learn" how to do it! A little scary.Parents signed release forms, had to be called before the paddling and the student would be paddled in a room with no other children in it.

I went to Catholic school when i was little and we were paddled, our ears pulled, hot sauce on our tongue! It was crazy!
