Yep, the heat index in the South has been really high this year.

Yup.

Go in September or October - free dining is available those months if you stay onsite, and the crowds are light.

I went in October and it was fantastic!

We are huge WDW fans. DH and I went on our honeymoon, our DD(5) has been three times already. (we live in NY).

If we could only go in August we WOULD NOT GO!

I went once in august. I had a three day pass. After the first day I did not go into the parks again. This was back when tickets didn't expire. It was so hot and humid we were just miserable. And it was crowded compared to off season.

If you've never been to WDW there's no way you can plan a trip in a couple weeks and get the most out of your experience. You aren't likely to get reservations for character meals if that is important to you, you don't have a lot of time to research which parks and attractrions your family will enjoy most. I don't think Disney is the place for spur of the moment trips if you have never been before.

I say Nay.

Disneyland would be more tolerable than WDW, weather-wise, in August.

Another one to say DONT go in August, unless your life depends on it..
I live in south GA and the heat is unbearable. Worse than ever I do believe. Swimming pools feel like saunas. Ive done disney in JUNE, and it almost killed me. The cost of water a day a lone for 4 people costs us well over $100. and believe me, you think you want to take your own water bottle to refill but its so hot tasting in about 10 mins you just want something COLD to drink. yes, there are water parks, etc, but its still miserable. everyone is grumpy and kids do not enjoy waiting in lines for one hour in 110 degree weather. Its also fairly crowded still. I would not do it in August.

We just got back. We have to go in the summer, because I'm a teacher. It was first time as a family: me, DH, DD1(5) and DD2(4 months). We've had several major heat waves in NJ this summer already (upper 90's with high humidity), so the weather wasn't really different from what we were experiencing.

If you decide to go, know it will be hot, know it will be crowded, commit yourself to doing it at a reasonable pace, and bring along your sense of humor. Feed your kids regularly to avoid meltdowns, and allow for ample stroller time to avoid meltdowns. (DD1 was in the stroller often, DD2 spent most of the week in the Babyhawk.)

And, definitely seek out as much advice as you can on the DISBoards. Go to the parks early, have a plan to get Fast Passes, know what attractions you must see and don't sweat the ones you don't. Oh, and make dining reservations before you go. Preferably NOW. You can always cancel them, but you will often find that, if you wait for when you're in the park, you're greatly limited in terms of dining, and will end up eating "counter service," which is the Disney version of fast food.

PM me if you want more specifics!

OP, did you decide to go? If so, I have some great links and valuable information if you're interested. PM me if you'd like to know what I've picked up from the Disney books I've read and research I've done.

I live an hour from Disney and it has been mid 90's here with extreme humidity... it is also our hurricane season so we get lots of rain here and there on most days. Regardless of WHEN you go, there is always a ton of people there. I had season passes and went different months and days thinking others won't but that wasn't true!

Busch Gardens is about 1.5- 2 hrs max from Disney- fairly easy to get to as long as you avoid rush hour traffic. Speed limit is 70 most of the way
