Winter Clothing List for Critique

Okay, so I am trying to go simpler this year. We live where it gets really cold (down to -10F / -30C) and we do go out to sled etc. in the cold. My older daughter will be attending pre-school and the toddler does EC so we will still be going diaper-free indoors for much of the winter.

So, here's my list. The first number is how many of the item the pre-schooler needs, the second is for the 16-month-old. Some of these we already have.

Am I missing anything? Also, if you have hand-me-downs in natural fibers, feel free to PM me with FFS offers. LOL.

Outerwear:
Snow boots (1/1)
Raincoat (1/1)
Rainboots (1/1)
Snow pants or bib (1/1)
Winter jacket (down) (1/1)
Gloves (1/1)
Hat (1/1)
Slippers (1/0)
School shoes (e.g. Mary Janes) (1/0)

Clothes:
Sweaters or sweatshirts (3/3)
Warm dresses (think playdress-daydress or sweater dress or corduroy jumper) (3/3)
Jeans (3/2)
Leggings or cable-knit tights (3/3)
Cotton pants for indoors (0/5)* (n.b. these are just to make the list comprehensive, I think I have all of these)
Long-sleeve tees or cotton turtlenecks (3/3)
Tee-shirts (3/3)
Socks (10/10)
Holiday outfit (1/1)
Hoodie (1/1)

Pajamas (3/3)

Am I missing anything? I do laundry at LEAST twice a week.

I'd say more gloves. With my kids, one glove is always getting lost or they're left at school or just soaking wet from playing outside in the snow.

Good point... I was thinking waterproof gloves, though.

Pajamas?

Just wondering what the numbers mean..eg (3/2)?

PAJAMAS!!!!!!!! THANK YOU! That is why I put it up. Awesome. Esp. as it does get cold and they kick their covers off at night.

The numbers are (how many are needed for DD1, aged 4 in Oct./how many for DD2, 18 months in Oct.).

scarf? New underware or thermals?, undershirts?

Not sure if you 'count' it or not but extra blankets for the car?

I like to layer for cold weather. "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing".

I'd add
- undershirts
- long underwear
- scarves
- extra gloves or mittens
- extra hat

Even waterproof gloves get muddy and messy, or lost, and you'll need an extra pair - usually at the last minute on the coldest, ugliest day of the winter!

I guess I'm the dissenting opinion on the gloves. My DC have always only had one pair and have been fine for the last 6 years, but then again we are always at home in the winter. Also, if you are trying to go simpler, we use the kids snow boots as rain boots and they work fine. Your list looks good to me.

For me, I'd do 2 dresses and add a pair of warm dressy pants like cords or something. I agree with adding long underwear.

SCARVES... I think DD1 can re-use her scarf from last year, but yes! Maybe a neck gator for the baby.

I was going to use the tee-shirts as undershirts, and leggings as long underwear, since they will only go outside once or twice a day when it's really cold. I don't want DD1 steaming at pre-school, but you have me thinking. Maybe in that case I need five sets. Perhaps long underwear inSTEAD with just one or two tees?

I think I will buy one set of hat, gloves and mittens. If they lose them... ugh, no, you're right, I need some in case they lose them as selection in our town is poor and you can't always drive the hour to the larger stores. We'll see if I can get them on a great sale. If not, I'll pick up the extras later in the season.

Does that not get bulky in spring? I can't imagine my daughter's Keens working as rain-boots. I found one pair that looked like it could double (one thing I like about rain boots is that kids can put them on themselves... unlike some snow boots) but then I realized snow would just fall right in there.

I will consider this. It's a good point and a place we could save a lot of $.

CORDS- good idea. She liked her old cords, and baby has some. Thank you.

I think I need another coat rack for the kids winter things, LOL. Alternatives to that are welcome. Last winter was hard because I had all our stuff in one cardboard box in a shelf. At least it had a place but the toddler is much more mobile now so I need something more organized so i can get their stuff out quickly, no mucking around.

Suggestions?

Crocs used to make 'rain' boots. check the crocs.com and see if they are still there and watch for a sale(which they are forever having)

I mean, a rain-snow boot, not a rain boot, and I am massively prejudiced against Crocs... clearly you did not peruse the Why Do People Hate Crocs thread. Seriously, though, I will check it out if it's a rain-snow boot...

This thread made me take a look at my son's clothes since it's "back to school" time, and he had 23 T-shirts! I asked him to pick out six to keep, which he happily did. I didn't realize that he had so many clothes - probably because he kept getting them from grandparents at holidays and he hasn't really grown out of any tops this year which normally would prompt me to get rid of them.
