Anyone had to deal with a uniform waiver for school?

Our public school system is starting uniforms this fall.Khaki or black pants, grey or maroon tees or polos.I've ordered the tees(can't find them in stores of course, must order them from the pta),since ds doesn't wear polos. The problem is ds won't wear ANYTHING with zippers or buttons, aside from coats when he absolutly has to.So the uniform pants are out of the question. He'll have major meltdowns just putting them on,and I am not putting him through that every morning. Then he'll be uncomfortable all day,and that will affect his behavior.Last year he lived in jogging pants and other pull on pants.I've been trying to get a hold of the school department with no luck.I even tried his drs office for a note, and they are saying no.They just said keep trying with the school dept and if that doesn't work perhaps they'll write a note, but probably not.How can they say no?To me this is a medical reason.I've dealt with the superintendent's office before and they have been very rude to me(trying to get a religious exemption to vax,the city is saying we need a religious leader to sign a letter when the state does not require that, just a form). So I'm afraid they'll be rude about this too,if I can ever get a hold of them.I'm so frustrated with this. Thanks for reading.

Are they specifying a particular brand of pant or just the color and overall style? I can think of several uniform pant companies that make cotton twill pants with elastic waists, no snap/zippers/buttons. Especially in the smaller sizes. Even at our private school the brand of pant isn't dictated, just the style and color. Maybe it would be easier (and less conspicuous for your child) to find something he will wear in the correct color? If you post the specifics of what the school is looking for and the specifics of what your child might accept, I'll bet this forum or the schools forum could come up with some options for you.

I was kinda thinking the same thing.

another thought... you could also send in a Notarized statement that looks very official exempting him of needing the exact pants b/c of a handicap/disorder he has. Just send it in with the rest of his papers, send him to school with pants that look like the others and wait and see if they say anything.

if they do, using words like "discrimination against a handicapped person" usually brings light to a situation if you know what I mean.

I know for a fact Children's Place sells elastic waste pants as that is what we have put DS2 in for the last 2 1/2 years. I know they go up to at least a 4T maybe even a 5T.

I know they have them in different colors, including blue and black, in the past.

I know my sister signed a waiver saying that my niece didn't have to wear a uniform after a teacher confiscated her sweatshirt because she considered faded black to not be black, but grey, and not consistent with their dress code. The school was annoyed, but it was the law that she could opt out so they couldn't really do anything about it. I don't know what the laws are here now, or where you are, though. This was quite awhile ago - I think my niece was in her first year of middle school, and she's about to turn 23.

I finally got a hold of someone at the superintendent's office. The waivers aren't available yet,but my ds should qualify for one as soon as they are.She was very nice and told me to just keep checking the website,as the form will be available there.

They are not specifying a brand, but the pants have to be khaki or black, and not pull on.The shirts are either polos or tees, maroon or grey.So the shirts are no big deal,we'll just do tees. He's a big boy,he's only 9 but in a 16 husky for the waist(they are huge everywhere else and look terrible, and he is so undomfortable)I can get away with a 12 or 14 in the elastic waist.I'm going to ask that he wear black jogging pants or plain black shorts while it's still warm. Thanks!

Have you seen Soft Clothing's line? Made especially for kids with sensory issues? They make dress pants. http://www.softclothing.net/

Have you considered modifying dress pants for him? That way, they can look like buttoned/zipped dress pants in the front, but the elastic in the back would allow him him pull the pants up and down without messing with zippers and buttons.

If they give you a hard time, have an meeting to modify the IEP to include dress code.

Ive seen Target has 'khaki' pants that are pull-on. They have them in plus sizes. Really who is gonna look at the kids waist of the pants ( oh wait I remember how UAV some schools can be about thier special dress codes) But I dont think your DS is going to keep his shirt tucked in so it shouldnt matter. Also GAP.com carries husky and has uniform 'ok' stuff.

My son is 'husky' in the waist and has these little bird legs and short legs at that... I totally get what you mean about pants.... Thankfully he does homeschool and we dont have this particular issue. My DS lives in boxers, and in the winter, jogger pants but I do feel your pain.

I did end up speaking to someone else, and she said the waivers won't be available until the first week of school, but that it was fine to send him in jogging pants.I will have his IEP fixed to include the waiver as well.I did check out softclothing, but I'm not sure if the xxl will fit.I think it might, but I'm afraid to buy mailorder for something that might not fit. Thanks!
