My son has itchy hands/feet/legs and hives

This has just started this summer. Every so often his hands get red and super itchy. Sometimes he gets hives as well. Once he had hives around his mouth. Today his legs and feet itch too. But he doesn't have hives or itchiness anywhere else.

Nothing has changed as far as soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc. Could he have all of a sudden developed a reaction to something? I just give him Benedryl when this happens.

Any idea what this could be?

I react with itchy hands and feet too. For me it was antibiotics, and whatever I used on the carpets to kill dust mites. You're going to have to pay close attention to what he touches or eats prior to itching, I think.

It could also be to some sort of environmental stimulant....grass, chlorine from the pool if he's swimming, certain pollens that are in the air during the summer. I get a type of eczema on my hands ONLY during the summer when it's hot that itches like crazy. The heat triggers it and nothing else! Hope he gets some relief!

You might be onto something about the chlorine or maybe even the heat. Because why would it only be in the summer? But he's already on Claritin for environmental allergies. You'd think that would help.

Claritin and Zyrtec did nothing for my DS....he's now on Allegra and that helps him a ton. The itchy hands and feet could just be irritation and dryness from the heat and chlorine, not necessarily an allergy. But, that definitely wouldn't explain the hives then.

Zyrtec didn't work for my son either. How is Allegra different?

I started getting that from seafood and salicylates in my late teens. I was fine before that. It was super itchy!

Allegra is just a different antihistamine and it's prescription strength. So far, it's the only thing that keeps my son's runny nose completely under control.
