new house, old pet urine stains on carpet

We just moved into a new house. The bedrooms upstairs all have old carpet that we plan to replace eventually, but for now we are stuck with it until we have the funds.
After being here a couple weeks, I noticed slightly darker areas on the carpet that stink like urine. It smells so bad its almost like no one has ever tried to clean it up before. I steam cleaned all the carpets and spot treated the stains, but as soon as it dries the scent comes right back.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of the smell? The previous owners had a dog, so I'm sure it was the source of the accidents. I am pregnant and sensitive to smells so this is driving me crazy!

Not really.


Enyzme cleaners do help, things like Nature's Miracle. You need to fully soak the stain down to the pad, not just pour a bit on but truely soak it. However I've found really the only way to remove the smell totally is to rip it out

Even after ripping out the carpet, make sure to use Kilz on the floor boards if you don't replace them.

i have an abnormally sensitive nose too. I feel for you.

What is underneath? Is it hard wood flooring?

I might consider ripping out the carpet now, painting the floor, and buying $20 area rugs at Lowes. That might hold you over until you can re-carpet, and relieve your nose.

Especially if you have your own cats. Once they start peeing there too, it's all over forever.

I would also explore the option of ripping out the carpet and living with a cheap and temporary flooring solution until I could afford something nicer and more permanent.
