Rotating greens in smoothies - how to avoid waste?

I'm sorry in advance if this is a really dumb question

We have recently discovered the wonders of green smoothies I keep reading about how you should rotate the greens that you use in them, even to the point of only using each green once a week. My question is HOW do you do this without wasting a ton of greens? All of the stores here sell the greens in bunches - we have been buying spinach, kale, and chard - but we are hard pressed to use the bunches up before they go bad even if we use them almost every day. (They come in pretty big bunches).

So say I buy a bunch of chard for Monday, and we use a small percentage of it, what do I do with the rest? Do you just try to use it up in other recipes (which honestly we are unlikely to do), or is the idea to avoid eating that green entirely for the rest of the week? By the following Monday that chard is not going to be in very good shape, yk?

Thanks!

I wonder if you can freeze them? I had the same problem, but the green smoothie phase didn't last very long for me unfortunately...

Well, you can definitely freeze ANY green that you plan to put in a smoothie. =)

BUT, I think people take the 'rotate' thing a little too seriously. IMO it's fine to have 3 days of spinach, 3 days of chard, 3 days of kale, etc.

I have to agree with Sayward. I'm not going to waste any. So whatever I get that week, gets used up. Then the next shopping trip I rotate from whatever I got before. I love green smoothies and have noticed an improvement in my health and well being! Glad you are on the Green Smoothie train lady!

OK, thanks! I might try freezing some. Sayward, I also think that 3 days in a row would probably be fine. The problem is that these bunches are huge, and it would take at least 7 days (probably more like 8 or 9) in a row to use them up.

Freeze them! I keep a bag of frozen spinach and a bag of frozen kale in my freezer and just switch off. I also figured out that you can kind of crumble the frozen spinach by squeezing it through the bag (once it's already frozen). Then you don't have to chop it before freezing it. I do chop the kale before freezing it though, because my blender can't handle unchopped greens.

I've been making smoothies for years. I just change them every few weeks.

I think freezing greens will change their color.

Agreed w/ most everyone. Rotate every few days or weeks.
It's once you have one green for months that you accumulate toxins and react to that green. Variety is important.

Plus, green smoothies keep well in the fridge for up to 4 days... so, make it all in one day and store for the next day!
