I live in CA and we are having an "epidemic" here. I found out about it because a FB friend posted something on her wall about seeing a commercial and hearing a baby cough that has whooping cough. (I don't watch much TV, so most of my news is from FB )

I am confused. I thought that the vaccine doesn't prevent transmission. So if the parent is vaccinated, the baby would still "get" pertussis, but pertussis now might be hidden by the parent (i.e., the parent will have it but might not know they have it because it's not as virulent). If the baby hasn't had it's full compliment of vaccinations, couldn't the baby now come down with full-blown pertussis (worst case scenario here)?

How is vaccinating an adult helping the baby that doesn't have his/her own vaccinations?

The really funny thing is even vax babies don't build 'immunity' through vax until they are past the stage that WC is deadly/ most dangerous (namely the first 3 months)

Quote:
While most infants are given routine diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis (DTaP) immunizations beginning at 2 months of age, they may not be fully protected against pertussis until they have received at least three doses of the vaccine. During this time, they are especially vulnerable to pertussis.(8)

Yes, I've seen it, yes, it annoys me. My family respects my decision not to vaccinate but they don't think I'm making the right decision. Needless to say, anytime the commercial comes on and we're in the same room, I get the side eye and I just choose to ignore it.
