Let's see the evidence and look it over with our critical thinking caps on.

look at the recent examples in germany. 2006: 1600 cases, 2 deaths, 2 currently dying from SSPE.

Germany 1999: 1500 cases, 2 currently dying from SSPE, 1 death in the outbreak itself.

I think the fact of SSPE needs to be looked at when considering the case fatality ratio of measles.

but that is all I will say on the subject since it will tie me up for days you can see links to the SSPE case stories by searching my name and SSPE. they are in german but you can ise google translate. also, note that germany has had 15 or so of these SSPE cases since starting to record them in 2001, i think it was? or 1999, i forget. one of the articles talks about this.

Some things to keep in mind:

1) are the cases being reported through an active or passive reporting system?
2) are the deaths being reported through an active or passive reporting system
3)what is the estimated completeness of reporting for cases?
4)what factors lead to a high degree of incompleteness of reporting?

According to this study developed countries typically see 1 death per 1000 cases. In underdeveloped nations the fatality rate can be as high as 28%. Of course, since they do not have sophisticated tools to diagnose those rates may be much higher.

It also states that the complications rate is 10%.

Here is an article from WHO regarding using Vitamin A to reduce complications from Measles
