I have a 5.5 yr old ds. Last september he started squeezing his eyes shut reeeallly tight, like an exaggerated blink, ALL the time, it got much worse when he was tired or when someone like Grandma pointed out the blinking etc.
We took him to the optomotrist, eyes are fine. Decide to totally ignore it, after a while, a few weeks, it goes away.
Now, we have cycled through nose sniffing, eyelash "grooming", and now currently it is a "yawn" type of mouth opening, with a little gasp in it.
We homeschool, family is intact and happy and homelife is peaceful. From my point of view, there are no major stresses for him to cause these to be anxiety related. He is quite shy by nature, but we don't force him to be outgoing when it's against his nature currently.
I have gently discussed it with him: yes, he knows he is doing it, no, he doesn't know why it happens, yes, he feels compelled to do it and finds he cannot stop it, yes, he'd like it not to happen. I find when he is trying to talk about something exciting to him, the tics ramp up.
We are a family of 6 and it is understood by everyone to not acknowlege the tics, as they do make ds feel bad, so everyone ignores it.
However...is this a sign of something I need to be concerned about? Should I go to the dr?
I have upped ds's magnesium in the form of lot's of almonds since I read magnesium can be related to facial tics. Not enough time has passed to evaluate if it's helping.
thoughts?
