Favorite Documentaries?

DH and I love to watch documentaries together. Recently we've enjoyed watching Food Inc., Supersize Me, The Business of Being Born and Vaccine Nation.

Please share some of your favorite documentaries. Thanks!

gray gardens - be sure to get teh documentray - tehre is a film by the same name that is based on the documentary.

love docs, i cannot remember the water one i watched, maybe similar to tapped. anyway. just watched "fuel" it was good too.

Another lover of documentaries here. I loved Food Inc. I also really liked Shut Up and Sing (about the Dixie Chicks). Those women have such an incredible bond. Love that.

I also really liked Who Killed the Electric Car and the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

I also really liked the one about the making of a Chorus Line, but I can't recall the name right now.

Oh, yeah, and King Corn, too.

There was a good one called Boy Interrupted on HBO. It's about a young boy who had bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. His parents are film-makers. It was horribly sad, but very interesting, especially if you don't know a lot about mental illness. His parents made the film, and I felt they were incredibly brave to do so. It's obvious that they want to help other people out there who are going through similar issues.

I love documentaries too!

For the Bible Tells me So is about Christianity and homosexuality and looks at what the Bible actually says about homosexuality in its historical and cultural context. It follows the story of several Christian families and documents their journey to accepting their gay family members. It always makes me cry.

Why We Fight is about the wars our country has fought for the past 50 years. It's kind of heavy but very interesting.

This Film is not yet Rated is about the MPAA rating system and how arbitrary it is. Very fascinating. (Warning: this film does show cut scenes from R rated movies so you probably at the very least want to watch it first before letting a child see it.

Those are my favorites that I can remember right now.

I love documentaries, so it's hard to make a short list, but a few standouts are:
  • The Corporation
  • Encounters at the End of the World
  • Capitalism: A Love Story
  • Manda Bala (you need a strong stomach for this one but it's weird in the best possible way and beautifully filmed)
  • Life and Debt
  • A Walk to Beautiful
  • Off the Grid: Life in the Mesa

Spirit of the Marathon. It follows several atheletes, both amateur and elite, in preparing for the 2005 Chicago Marathon. I really enjoyed it.

I LOVE documentaries! To earn a little extra $ DH worked part time at this really funky, locally owned video store while I was pregnant. It was kind of ironic because we don't even have a TV lol but we could rent as many DVDs as we wanted so we took advantage and watched them on the computer

I watched one called Blue Vinyl that was pretty shocking

IOUSA - haven't seen this one yet but heard strong recommendations and plan to get it asap.

I thought of another one I really liked: The US versus John Lennon. I think that was the title.

But hands down my favorite documentaries are Food Inc, Shut Up and Sing, and I also really like Roger and Me (and the earlier Michael Moore films). I don't know - for some reason I can't get into the later Michael Moore films. I used to go to his films on opening day. Now, I can't even get through the dvd. I don't why...

The Harvey Milk one was really good (and so was the feature film, IMO).

I've so been wanting to see Jesus Camp forever, but haven't found the time yet. It's on my list.
