Breastfeeding with teeth comments....

Can I say these really annoy me?

They annoyed me before my baby had teeth. And now he has two bottom ones all of a sudden (they came in together and he is only 15 weeks! lol) ... We have had no problems so far. In fact, I imagine if anything is going to be a potential problem - it will be top teeth. His bottom teeth are protected by his tongue which is so delicatley in its proper place when he feeds .....

So what is up with the teeth and breastfeeding comments? Like 'ohhh...you just wait!'.......doom doom doom. etc I don't get it? I am sure he will eventually give me a good old chomp or two - but so what? It certainly won't become a habit (babies arn't silly! lol) and him having teeth certainly doesn't mean I am going to stop breastfeeding him! But why fuss about something that isn't even an issue yet? Why the doom and gloom? Why the fuss about nothing?

Anyone else annoyed by these comments?

Any whitty replies I can throw out cause I often have no idea what to say to this.

Nak
"teeth I can handle. I'm worried about when he gets braces!"

seriously, teeth aren't that big of a deal. There will be some bites, but you can work through it.

A lot of moms are worried about this, but once I explain to them how breastfeeding works (that most of the work is done by the lower jaw and the lower teeth are covered by the tongue) and give them some strategies for dealing with biting, they seem to calm down a bit.

I do the same thing as a pp - explain how nursing works and let them know that the teeth are covered by the tongue!

People often say "Oh, you'll stop breastfeeding when he gets teeth!", and I proudly point out that he's got 7 already! Yeah, it's frustrating, but sometimes I think they just are making conversation, or don't really know how early babies get teeth..

yes it gets on my nerves too, i admit i was nervous of feeding a baby with teeth at first but now i realise it's not a big deal yes i've bitten a few times but i can deal with it, but people telling me that i'm going to stop when my babies teeth come in as they if they know me better than i do yes i find it very annoying.

LOVE the braces comment, I am going to have to use that one.

DD started teething at 4 months and in the 2+ years she nursed I don't think she ever bit me. Maybe I just have a selective memory but her mouthful of teeth were never an issue.

I got those comments all the time from my in-laws. Apparently my MIL stopped BF'ing when DH bit her. That was that.

DS has bit me many many times. I think because although he was teething from about 3-4 mos old, he didn't actually get teeth in until he was much older (he has a pattern of teeth coming in & retracting) so he wasn't able to get used to BF'ing with teeth while he was still little. But, he's 18mos and now has 7.5 teeth (mostly front ones) and I'm still BF'ing. I don't get the doom & gloom thing either. Yeah, the biting hurts. So did childbirth, but I'm still going to have more kids.
