Early Morning Temp

So I am new to temping. I have always been aware of my cycle but as I have gotten a bit older (36), I can not tell O quite so easily. My problem with charting temps is that my sleep pattern varies and I tend to wake up and go back to sleep several times a night. So, if I don't get a solid 3 hrs, will the temp be falsely high? Is there any way a temp could be falsely low? My OPK showed surge last Tuesday but my temps are still low.

I am still night nursing a lot, so I wake up several times a night. I was really worried about trying to temp with only rarely ever getting 3 hours of sleep at a time, and never at a reasonable time of the morning (DS loves to nurse from 4-6 am ). However, I have been able to see a clear temp shift every cycle since I started charting again. The broken sleep doesn't seem to have affected it too much. Don't know about the low or high temps thing.

BTW, I do temp at approx the same time every morning, before I get out of bed, despite my crazy wake-up schedule.

I think everyone is different, but for me, taking my temp at the same time every morning seems to be the most important.

Not getting 3 hours of solid sleep does not really affect things much. My son still wakes up occasionally during the night, and even if I get up to feed him then return to bed and take my temp (at the usual time) under an hour later, it doesn't get off.

But, as I said, taking it at the wrong time totally messes up the reading. Once, I slept through my alarm and took my temp 2.5 hours later than usual, and the reading was practically post-O.

As for a positive OPK and no temp shift, it's possible to get a + and not O. That's what is great about temping. It will confirm ovulation has occured, whereas OPKs say you will probably O soon.

My last cycle I got positive OPK's and I never O'd I talked to doc and she said my body kept trying but never succeeded. It is possible for you to get that surges several times and nothing happen. I didn't use OPK's this cycle because of the confusion. But in your case since your temps maybe all over the place from waking all night I would suggest using them.

I can wake up half way through my 3 hours but if I do I just go right back to sleep and my temp doesnt seem to be bothered. i think as long as you are consistant on time and try to fall right back asleep it may be ok.

Sorry I am not more help.
