5yo having accidents

I am getting sick of my 5yo smelling like pee. He wears a pull up to bed & it is soaked every morning. And it seems like nearly every day he's peeing himself again. We had issues with this around Christmas, because he was ignoring needing to go in order to keep playing video games. We stopped letting him play until he hadn't had any accidents for a few weeks.

It seems to be the same issue now, ignoring needing to go in order to keep playing, except that it's playing outside. And he doesn't seem to notice or care that he's peed himself. It's just disgusting.

Right now he's whining at me to give him a treat from the birthday party he went to today, in pee soaked clothes. He tried lying to me & telling me it's water when you can smell it a mile away. He was checked for a bladder infection a couple months ago & didn't have one, but I suppose he could have gotten one since then.

Some food sensitivities can cause kids to wet. My 8 yr old wets his bed if he's had MSG close to bed time. Other foods that can cause this problem include, but are not limited to, red or yellow food color, high fructose corn syrup, wheat, caffeine.

Don't know if you do this already, but I would get him involved as much as possible in the clean-up. If he doesn't want to go to the bathroom because he doesn't want to take away the time from playing, then I'd make it so if he has an accident then it takes even more time away from playing. So that would mean he takes his wet clothes off, puts them into laundry hamper (or wherever you need them to go pre-washing machine). Then maybe a wash-off of his legs in the tub, or a good wipe-down with baby wipes or whatever works best for you guys. Then a clean-up of the floor (or I guess maybe that should come first so no one else step in it, lol!). Anyway, you get the point. And make sure he gets the point too. Make sure to talk to him about how much longer it's taking to do all this clean up and how much easier it would be to just quickly pee in the toilet and then go back to playing.

Also re. the lying I wouldn't ask him whether he wet himself (leaving it open for him to lie). Just state what you see "ds, you peed in your pants. Come we have to do a clean-up now".

I have posted re similar issues in the past and am surfing the web on the topic again tonight so I totally understand how frustrating the pee smell can be.

My older child had similar focus issues... just didn't want to stop what he was doing to pee. It mostly resolved between 5 and 6, but still resurfaces sometimes, esp when he is stressed/ overtired.

My younger child idolizes her brother, and mimics him in many areas. Other than that I cannot figure out why she is still having trouble at 4.5.

I hope you get great advice here. In the meantime you have my empathy.
