Is This A Good Thing?

I bought my cloth diapers six and a half years ago. Nobody sold cloth diapers in my city at the time. I had to order them online. There wasn't a lot to choose from (though it felt very overwhelming), but most of what was available was good and the people selling the products knew a lot of about them.

Since that time, cloth diapers have clearly become more mainstream. They've steadily gained in popularity. I know a lot more people who cloth diaper now, and not people who I'd consider to be green or AP by any stretch of the imagination. That should be great.

Sometimes though, I feel kind of discouraged. So many new products are available, and while some are wonderful additions to the market, others seem really gimmicky... just trying to separate people from their money. I see $400 worth of cloth diapers dumped on kijiji or craigslist after somebody tried cloth for two months and gave up.

Mostly it just strikes me that long time cloth diapering moms seem to move in the direction of more and more simple approaches to cloth, and the market seems to be moving in the direction of more and more features, and higher cost diapers. I usually buy my diapers from WAHMs who sell products they've personally used and can recommend, and I'm torn about whether it's a good thing or a bad thing that department stores and fancy boutiques are now selling cloth diapers.

I think it's a good thing with a few downfalls.

Let's say that the newest gimmick comes out and 10 ladies decide to try cloth diapering BECAUSE of that gimmick. Now, let's say 9 of those ladies decide it's too much work and post all the diapers on Craigslist. That's still 1 lady who would not have otherwise CDed who is. AND it's a ton of diapers on Craigslist for the rest of us to buy (assuming the gimmick works).

I love CDing, but I love fancy diapers. To me prefolds are burpcloths. I love AIOs and just below that I love pockets. I'll use fitteds with a cover if I run out of anything else. I'll use a sposie before I use a prefold.

So, I guess you could say that I am actually that 1 mom out of 10. Because if it wasn't for AIOs, I wouldn't have tried CDing.

So, if the Flip system or whatever other CD/sposie hybrid gets more moms to try CDing, then I say it's great. Some of those will stay with that system, some will move on to another, and some will give up. But either way it doesn't take customers away from the WAHMs, it just adds potential customers who would have never CDed otherwise.
