Please help, bad thrush

My seven month old has bad thrush, it just developed a few days ago, but has spread like wildfire, now it's horrible! We can't get the nystantin for it due to insurance issues, and searching for home remedies have pulled up a trillion ways to battle it, I'm just very overwhelmed. She doesn't nurse, she was taking her baby-dophilus until this last month, but got her started again on it yesterday, and I've steralized/washed with vinegar all her bottles/nipples and clothes/diapers (she has a yeast infection too)

I've heard using vinegar, coconut oil, grape seed extract, and genetian violet, but unsure how safe they are, and HOW to apply them to her...

Please help!

Hi,
I found these two websites to be the most helful when we were dealing with thrush at my home:
http://drjaygordon.com/breastfeeding/thrush.html
http://www.drjacknewman.com/help/Candida-Protocol.asp

The second one is more extensive, but was really effective for me- the only problem is getting the all purpose ointment- I didn't get it myself, but used all the other known treatments. Do you have thrush on your nipples too? That was what was hardest for me to get rid of...

If the Baby dophilus has worked for you go up to 3x per day if you don't see any negative reactions.

You should probably be on high dose probiotics as well.

I would NOT at all use gentian violet, it is a chemical and I don't know why it gets a lot of mention in bf'ing circles.

Coconut oil is great, you can eat 3T. per day or more and it will help you and also come out as beneficial fatty acids in your milk. One can of full fat coconut milk is also equivalent to 3.5 T coconut oil.

I would do enzymes instead of any other "killers"

Have you started solids?

Newman's APNO contains an antibiotic right? Again I do not understand why this is another common treatment. The antibiotic will further mess up an already damaged digestive system.

Thanks for answering! I started myself on probiotics and will start taking coconut oil, would that be something that I could give the baby? Great idea increasing her babydiphilus.

She does not nurse, so even though I could have it from kissing her, I don't have to worry about getting it on my nipples. Basically I need something to give or apply to her. She does do some solids, I thought about giving her some yogurt...

I'm so sorry I didn't read your history closely.

Is it possible she is not tolerating her formula? or reacting to the solids?

Coconut oil is actually an ingredient in some formulas so yes its completely safe and appropriate to give, barring any allergic reactions.

What solids is she eating? I would stick with veggies, fats, egg yolks and meat rather than high sugar fruits or yogurt.

Hey thanks! Not sure why she got it, but I'm going to be watching her a lot closer. She only eats veggies (mainly carrots), she doesn't like fruit, and she gets oatmeal daily and sometimes mashed potatoes because she loves them so much. She doesn't get meat or egg yolks yet or any dairy. I was told yogurt might help her thrush since it has probiotics, but since she is on probiotics I probably don't have to worry about that. I'm going to look about coconut oil, and maybe cod liver oil, someone told me about that today, is there an age where that is safe to give? Thanks for your help!

Safe age for CLO you mean? I would start that soon b/c she is formula fed and needs the omega 3's... see here:

http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-live...il-basics.html

Yogurt probiotics are really not all that potent unless you make it yourself and ferment 24 hours. And even then, they are not normally what colonizes the human gut.

Is the oatmeal a baby oatmeal with iron? That can mess up the digestive system too.

I thought I replied to you! Anyway, yes I meant an age for CLO. Wow I didn't know I should start her on CLO because of the formula, good to know! Do you have any dosage suggestions?

Didn't think about Iron, come to think of it, her oatmeal and her formula both contain iron, should I do something about that?

I might make a new post, but do you have any other suggestions to help me support an unvaccinated 7 month old's immune system, health, and developement besides probiotics and CLO?

I had great results with Candex enzymes, and they don't contain the herbs that some yeast formulas do. Water in the washer should be over 122deg to kill yeast, so it will have to be higher on the water heater or add some heated from the stove. For best results, treat the whole family and house. No towel sharing. Boiling water on the bathtub. It is very hard to get dh's to participate and many of them have an ongoing yeast infection under their balls (jock itch, anyone?). All those carbs you are feeding the baby just become sugar in the gut- food for the yeast. Much better to switch to protein and fat for calories while battling the yeast beast. Vitamin C also helps as does zinc. Do you know how she got the infection? Did she take an antibiotic?

Jane, IIRC Newman put the antibiotic in the apno because of cracks on nipples which are a common complaint (and entry point for many infections). It is really meant to be all-purpose, for those with docs that are bf ignorant.

Wow thanks for all the great advice! We have apartment washers, so I'll have to add boiling water to all the diapers, that will be great fun trekking all those pots of water to the washroom! :LOL I can do the boiling water on the bathtub and cleaning towels and such, but any suggestions on how to treat dh?

I actually never considered carbs with her. Mashed potatos are carbs aren't they? She loves them sooo much, I never thought about it hurting her! I didn't think about introducing meat to her, I thought that was later on that I could. Any suggestions on first meats? We don't eat a lot of meat around here, how would I prepare it for her? I don't do purees (well except for the mashed potatoes), so it would have to be really soft I guess. She has two teeth on the bottom if that makes a difference. I saw the recipe for bone broth, going to start adding that in our diet. And what do you suggest for fats? Avocados? We're going to start daily spoonfulls of coconut oil (I can give that to her right?) is that considered a fat? She still gets the majority of her nutrients from formula, so not worried about her losing calories.

Do they make vit C +zinc for babies? I have Ester C, but not sure if that would be too much for her.

Really not sure how she got the infection, I guess I've been pretty lax with her foods, giving her bites of stuff I was eating. The doctor said that she had a lot of yeast, which knocked out her immune system's defenses, causing ear and sinus infections and thrush.

Thanks again!

Also I started perusing all the threads and archives in health and healing, and really feel a lot more educated on these issues! Any thing else that might be helpful keeping her well and healthy and her immunity strong? Thanks!
