Well, I simply do stuff around the house, and when he gets tired of watching me (or helping, depending on the thing) he goes to play by himself.
Also, he has a dust allergy, so when I clean upstairs he has to stay downstairs and vice versa. He plays alone for 30-60 minutes a day at least 4 days a week for cleaning. All in all he plays/'reads' alone for a few hours a day--spread out over the day. He talks to me off and on, asks me questions, says "I love you", asks me to "watch this", but I'm doing my thing and he's doing his.
My kid was SOOO not this kind of kid--always needed someone with him until I just started to expect him to play alone. If he asked me to play with him I said "No honey, gotta ___ right now" He'd whine at first, now he just accepts it and goes off to play!
We're also TV, video, computer, electronic toy-free (for DS, I mean), so when he's playing alone, he's not being entertained in any way (other than by himself and some simple toys/objects). I really think/hope this will build a number of skills in him that will benefit him in the future!
