"All Kids Do That"-But Do They? Vent - Page 2

hmmm.... i did this

i agree with the above posters that don't think it's anything malicious. in fact, i don't think it's that astonishing either. in my case, it was usually something i happened to want at the moment from someone i liked.

i didn't really think through that by taking it for me i was taking it away from them.

i also don't think the mom's response was out of line. it's not really a big deal and while it would be addressed, i'd hate to shame the kid that did it. that's what happened to me and it just made me more sneaky

A lot of kids do. My mother was very harsh with me when I stole gum when I was five, I remember taking it but not understanding that it was stealing and I remember her scolding me. She still feels badly about it and says she shouldn't have overreacted about a normal thing that can be stopped by explaining to the child what stealing is. My dd hasn't done it because we have talked from the time she was little about paying and what stealing is, not all kids get that. I think the mom reacted just fine and just because she didn't freak out in front of you and immediately scold her kid doesn't mean she won't discuss this calmly with her. I think it is nice to have a mom friend who is calm and not overly concerned about kid stuff, hopefully she will be that same calm and understanding mom when your child does something within the range of normal that she doesn't approve of and hasn't personally dealt with in her children.

Yes, I think it's common. However, the mom's reaction was not common. She just blew it off when it could have been a good learning experience for the child who took it.

I don't think we can surmise that the mother didn't use it as a teaching moment after op left.

True. I didn't think about after the OP left. It just sounds like she blew off the situation without even an apology.
