math for preschooler

Hi,
my DD is four now and I would love to dive into the world of math. I was totally frightened by math, to the point that I would have belly pain and vomiting before math homework (my father was the worst teacher ever ) I want her to love math and I am looking for books or websites to install that love of math. I am not looking for workbooks or such, just things that kind of educate me how to do math related activities and stuff.

I don´t want to do to much and as well not not enough. YKWIM?

thank you so much for your help!

I haven't read it, but Math Power: How To Help Your Child Love Math, Even If You Don't is supposed to do what you're asking for. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/020...ef=oss_product

You may want to read these articles as well.

I don't have any suggestions for books to educate you in how to teach a love of math, but I do highly recommend the Living Math website for wonderful lists of books to start a fun and gentle intro to math.

My DS is 4.5 and LOVES going on www.ixl.com for math. It is aligned with State standards and you can use it for free or pay a membership fee. At this stage, we are using it for free, but as he ages we may do a paid membership. Hope this helps!

Ds is 4 and we just picked up a set of cuisenaire rods to start with. We also are starting to work on learning the noumbers (1,2,3) since he can count. I'm trying not to get too many workbooks for learning since he's also interested in learning his letters and that's going to be somewhat book based.

We don't do anything formal. We do count just about everything. If Im counting and need say two of something I will take one out and tell her that one of whatever plus one of whatever equals two then have her count them. Sometimes she will get it othertimes she will look at me like I have two heads. We do a lot of baking together and she already identifies some fractions from doing cooking (like 1/2 and 1/4 since they are the most used). Shes around 3 1/2 now and we haven't done anything formal with her just life. Ive been debating getting a preschool numbers workbook but she isn't good with writing and gets upset at times when she can't do something.

Thanks for all the cool suggestions! I am going to have to dig through them all.

I like the IXL math, but I am still not quite sure if I want my kids to sit in front of a computer just now ... I am always afraid that they just get addicted or something - therefor they are not allowed any screentime.
DD is not english speaking, therefor it might be difficult to use english based programs -they are supposed to do it on their own, right?

I am going to read through the articles, thank you! And I guess I´ll get the book, sounds quite good (and I love books )

Living math is massive! I really have to have a closer looks, looks brilliant.

Thanks to you all!

This is what I'm doing w/my 4 year old. It's a Pre-Miquon booklet made by a hsing mom. Here is the link where you can find it, it's free. You need Cuisenaire rods though.

I was going to recommend Miquon also. Lots of manipulatives make it so much fun at that age. Our library also has Peggy Kaye's book Games for Math which has lots of fantastic ideas too. Enjoy! You may find yourself loving math after all this!

Oh yes! Thank you for the Cuisenaire book link! We have a set of Cuisenaire rods that I used a bit with DS, but never really continued with. He didn't really latch on to them. But I've been thinking they might be a better match for DD... but I didn't have any "pre-level" activities for them. This looks perfect!

Thanks again for the suggestions, I´ll have to look into the minquon thing, I have no idea what that is.

Thanks anyway!
