I did it! (toy declutter)

I am a hair shy of 38 weeks pregnant and looking forward to my lovely babymoon. The part my husband and I were dreading the most is the constant low level irritation around having the floor completely covered in toys. So I purged. It's kind of funny that the vast majority of less than awesome toys she had are either things that *I* have been holding on to for 20 years for sentimental reasons or things that other friends gave us that were sentimental to them. But our toddler doesn't really play with any of them--she dumps them on the floor then gets overwhelmed by the mess.

So they are gone! We reduced how many toys we have nearly by half. now they all (except the blocks) fit comfortably in the toy chest and it can close. This is a miracle. I'm so thrilled. We asked her for help deciding what to get rid of and she was surprisingly good about it. Every so often I would ask her if a particular toy was important to her and she'd say yes, she wants to keep it. So we did. I hope she maintains this mellow attitude towards 'things' as time goes on!

I feel so much lighter and better equipped to deal with picking up. I'm less afraid of tripping and killing myself while caring for a newborn. Whoo hoo!

(And I have to post this here because no one else in my life would care or be impressed. ha!)

Good for you!

Enjoy it while it lasts- you KNOW you're going to be inundated with more "stuff" when the baby arrives, especially if you have somebody like my mom who insists on giving "big sibling gifts" along with something for the new baby.

Good for you! That's wonderful. I sooo want to reduce our toys down to like 1/4 of what we have. Four kids and 10 years of toys accumulated and it drives me nuts. My kids also don't play with most of them; just a select few, it seems. We do store a lot of them in the garage, but some of them end up getting drug back inside and end up all over the house. My plan is to purge and organize as soon as school starts.

You are an inspiration, so thanks for sharing!

Good job! I just recently did this and we had a ton more closet space in DD's room!

YAY! I did the same thing a month or two ago... But felt the need to go out and get more toys So don't be like me. Stay out of the thrift store.

Awesome! I bet it feels great to get rid of all the junk. We're in the process of doing the same thing. The basement was cleaned out and we have a huge pile of stuff to put on garage sale and donate what doesn't sell. I'm planning to turn that room into a work room for my daycare kids (and DD). We're purging a lot of the toys (leaving the ones she actually plays with in her room) and putting Montessori work in the basement. Can't wait until it's actually finished!

I'm kind of 'lucky' in that not many people buy stuff for our kidlets. And I'm getting better about not buying her more toys. It's really been wonderful watching her the last couple of days. Her play is getting way more intense and interesting now that she's not wading through piles of junk.

Thank you all for the support and acknowledgment.
