DS not taking bottle, need help...

hey ladies!

i need some advice. i've been EBF since ds was born (he's now 10 wks). and i'm so proud of us for making it this far. he latches on great (now), and nurses like a champ despite my overactive letdown issue. shoot, even when he chokes b/c he's taken in too much, he's still eager to get back on and eat. he's already gained 2x his birth weight, so he's eating well.

my problem is that he won't take a bottle.at.all. now i'm back at work, and he's at daycare (well my SAHM friend is watching him for us), and he just won't eat. we started at 4 wks offering him a bottle b/c there were times that i had to leave the house without him, and i wanted him to still be able to eat. dh has always given the bottle, and while he was never good at eating with a bottle, he has eaten. we didn't offer the bottle regularly. i would make a bottle 3x a week for dh to give him while i did what i had to (i was gone for the most 2-2.5 hrs...i teach a class at the gym, and could not bring him). occasionally dh would give him the bottle, and he would try to eat from it, but most of the time he would just keep ds pacified until i got home and fed him.

well 2 sundays ago we had ds baptism, and i was in a dress that i knew i would not be able to feed him in, so i brought a few bottles with us (we were going to lunch afterward). he wanted NOTHING to do with them. wouldn't even try to eat. he fussed a bit at the beginning, but then i put him to sleep after seeing he was not going to eat. when he woke up during the baptism he was fine (smiling and everything). we tried to offer him the bottle again in the car going to the restaurant - still nothing. at the restaurant i wore him, and he was asleep. when we got home, it was about 6 hrs out from when i fed him that morning. he didn't cry, but i could tell when i finally nursed him that he was very hungry.

i've bought several different bottles/nips and he doesn't seem to want any of them. i spoke to my friend who is the one who will be watching him during the day a little while ago, and he's only eaten 3/4oz in 6.5 hrs . i don't know what to do...

anyone have any advice/suggestions for me?

he might have refused the bottle the day of the baptism bc he was with you and wanted to nurse.

i worked as a nanny yrs ago and the little girl didnt ever learn to drink from a bottle. i tired finger feeding with a thin tube, but what ended up working best was to use a syringe. i literally had to squirt milk down her throat. have you tried those methods, or even cup feeding?

no we haven't. i think you're right about the day of the baptism. esp since he kept following me with his eyes. as if to say "hey food, where are you going?"

i was hoping that it wouldn't come down to those methods, and that there'd be an easier solution, but i may have to just throw up my hands and get look at getting some syringes. *sigh*

thx so much for your help!!

I'm assuming you tried different nipple styles as well?

My sisters girls both preferred to use the rubber style nipples with wider bases as opposed to the silicone/firmer/narrow styles

If you feed him right before you leave and as soon as you get back, 3 or 4 ounces for 6.5 hours is actually not that unusual -- he's holding out for the good stuff.

My 10wo cries and carries on if my DH tries to give her a bottle while I'm home (we were doing this for practice before I went back to work), but apparently things go well when I'm gone. So I feed her when she's with me, and she gets a bottle when I can't.

I second the motion for trying out different types of bottles/nipples. I saw this one recently, and thought it looked promising.

Also, you could have whoever is feeding her try out different positions -- mine likes facing away more than the traditional bottle-feeding hold. We also warm up the nipple by running it under hot water.
