Newborn stash-Will this work?

This is my first baby and I intend to CD from the start. We're on a budget though so I don't want to over-buy and have the baby grow out of a size before they have been well-used. We already have four kids in the house so we do laundry every day so I expect to do at least one load of diapers per day.

With that said, here's what I'm thinking for the newborn stash:

-2 dozen GMD prefolds orange edge

-3 Bummis Super Brite size newborn

Will this work? Am I being too optimistic?

I know that I had a least 8 covers in my stash and washed every other day. I might go with another dozen prefolds. I think I had 4 dozen, 8 covers, 2 wool shorts and 2 wool covers.

I would buy another dozen prefolds and 3 more covers. Newborn poop will get on them quite frequently. You can just rinse and reuse, but it's still nice to have more.

At the very least you should try to get a few more covers. Are you planning on pinning or using a snappi to secure the prefolds? If not, you the runny newborn poop tends to get onto the cover more frequently, which will mean you will want more covers. You can always handwash the covers as needed throughout the day, but that gets old, quickly. Better to have a few extra covers and be able to just throw them in the wash, IMO.
You may also want to get another 6-12 diapers as well. That way you can have 2 dozen in the wash (which will be about 2 days worth) and still have some for the baby to wear.

it will depend on the size of your baby... mine came home at 5lbs 2 oz (and fell to 4lbs 14oz) the NB orange edge and bummi SWW NB diapers were HUGE we did best in the bummi orginals NB or the bummi superbrites in NB and preemie prefolds (even those needed to be folded down).
As for how many I'd aim for 3 dozen and 3 more covers..

I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I have 2 dozen GMD orange and 2 dozen Yellow. I have 4 x-small covers, 4 thirstys duo size 1 (I'm worried these wont fit a tiny baby), and one very small wool cover.

I also have a half dozen fitteds (KL 0's) and 4 lil Joey NB AIO's.

My only worry is that I don't have enough covers...but I think the 4 and the 1 wool will work until the duo's fit, if I can get load of laundry in each night.

I think that 3 covers isn't enough either- but I'd put aside the $$ and wait to buy more until the babe is here. My LO never used a NB cover- we went right to the Thirsties size small and the duo in size 1. She was 8lbs, 9oz at birth and didn't drop a ton of weight.

I started with 3 covers too- and bought 2 more within a week or so. Now we're up to 7 or 8 that get used, plus a handful of covers that fit, but not well, so they're only used in emergencies...

2 doz prefolds is ok but for covers you'll need 6-8.

if your baby is large enough, you could jump ahead to size smalls. I used BSWW on all 3 kiddos and only ever owned smalls and mediums. but I guess you can't plan on baby being born thick enough to skip newborn sizes.

Sorry, I think 8 covers is way too much, esp for someone wanting to stick to a budget. Three covers should be just fine! You will probably rinse and hang them dry more, but definitely doable. We had one being worn, one drying, and one ready to go. The 2 doz, I personally think that can work too with washing every other day.

ETA: I think this works at home...I did realize that 3 doesn't really give you an extra to have in the diaper bag. I do think you can make three work at home, maybe 4 if you had funds to get a prowrap (budget friendly). We didn't change covers with every diaper change.

My LO grew out of the BSWW NB size *very* quickly. She was 3.5kg at birth. We are using terry flats mostly so I guess they would be a bit thicker than prefolds but I wouldn't get the NB size again. We also have a couple of BSWW in the next size up and they still fit (just) and she is 12 weeks and nearly 7kg now.

O.K. so it sounds like I might be o.k. with just 2 dozen prefolds but should consider another dozen. On the BSWW, if I start with 3 newborn size and realize by the time we get home from the hospital (doing hospy birth for a variety of reasons not applicable here) that it is not enough, how quickly does GMD ship? Would more wraps get here in a few days? What if I did 1 or 2 of the Litewraps in newborn since they are a little cheaper? But it looks like they run bigger than the BSWW?

Oh my...just realized that I listed the wrong wrap in the beginning! I was having super preggo brain yesterday! I like the Bummis Super Brite better than the BSWW because I would want to be able to wipe and go as much as possible. Will that change how many newborn wraps I need? And to answer a previous question, I wasn't planning on using snappi or pins...trying to make this an easy process for my DH!

I think maybe a good compromise would be to get a dozen in a bigger size, maybe the yellow edge? Since you are planning to wash every day as you said, the yellows would be good "in case of emergency" dipes. Might be too bulky but it would do. Or a dozen flats perhaps?

I haven't used the duos myself, but I thought the GMD website pictures were very helpful. They feel it fits more around 4-15 lbs rather than 6-18 so it sounds good for the beginning. Also there's a photo of a preemie in a size 1 duo on their page:

size 1 duo were gigantically huge on my little one (5lbs 7oz) they gapped a ton and didn't fit at all till she was around 2 months . But your may not be as small.

Buying a dozen of the yellow edge is a good idea. Will they fit in the Bummis Super Brite newborn if the front or back edge is folded down?

i went with 1 dz orange and 2dz yellow gmd and was very happy.

my dd hovered around 7lb. she's now 7m and about 16lb and the yellows are going great. i sold the orange at 2m, could go a little longer, but could sell them to a friend.

i had 2 xs motherease covers that lasted till 4m
2 sm motherease lasted till 5m
nb bummis pull on, lasted till 5m
md motherease that i used from 4m and going

Don't worry, snappis will be VERY easy for your DH!! Mine loves them. They will help contain things better by making the diaper more snug.

I used thirsties size one on my newborn. She was 8 lbs 10 oz though.

I disagree. I think 6 covers minimum if they are PUL. If you make some with knit wool, I actually would bump it up to 8. Wool can take a long time to dry ime. Pul dries faster, but I still wouldn't have less than 6.

We started off with 2 dozen GMD newborn and 1 dozen of the GMD small. That worked well because in a pinch we could use the size small if necessary and once the newborn size started getting too small we already had some of the next size up.

There were some days we went through a lot of covers. I'd get the three like you planned, then maybe check craigslist or resale shops and get a few more used cheap ones. Like prowraps or something.

The first few weeks there would be the days where we'd go through 5 covers, and now it is very very rare for us to ever get poop on a cover.
