DO you let them get their own snacks? - Page 2

oh thank you for this thread!

I was beginning to wonder about snacks myself and thinking of posting a thread

My 5 yr old can make his own pb&j. I have struggled off and on whether it was a bad thing ( sometimes it was when I was down for the day) or good that he had some independence..

The only reason I don't let ds1 have free reign is because then we'd go broke on groceries, lol! What I do is give him some choices- he can have unlimited carrots, fresh fruit, etc; he can have all the toast he wants, and pb & j. I put limits on the pricer foods, like cans of soup, he has a 1 per day limit. He doesn't need to ask, but he can only have one.

Ds2 is only 22mos, so he doesn't get his own yet.

yes, my oldest is 5.5 and is very independant! He makes his own eggs (uses the microwave) he mixes his own juice, pours his own cereal.
I love to help him, and I try to get it done for him before he does it on his own, but he just tells me that he is a big boy and that he can handle it, lol

This is a really interesting thread and got me thinking. What do you have that your kids can snack on? Healthy ideas? Thanks.

In the pantry I have graham crackers, various cereals, tortilla chips, pretzels, natural peanut butter and granola bars.

In one lower draw and one low door shelf in the fridge I usually keep small containers of cranberry juice, drinkable or squeezable yogurt, baby carrots & other veggies, cheese (cut up in snack-size bags)...I know there are other items but I'm just too darn lazy to get up and look right now!:LOL

In the freezer I keep fruit juice popsicles they can get themselves after eating something nutritious.

Yes...we have a snack drawer..m

I have always had a snack drawer for my son and the other kiddos who have visited.I keep it stocked with granola bars, small bags of chips, peanuts, fruits and various nuts.I also keep a lot of other things in there.I also keep a snack drawer in one of the pullouts of my fridge for baggies of cheese chunks, fruit cups, pudding cups whatever needs to be in the fridge.Fruit.My son is allowed to get in these drawers whenever he wants as long as it isn't one hour before a meal.Works great. He isn't always complaining of "I'm hungry".And an added plus is my neices and nephews and Gregs friends. When they come over they attack the snack drawers also.Nobody is scared to eat at my house.( LOL)..But don't put a lot of "junk" in it though. So I know what he eats is healthy. My boys are 5 and 7 and are absolutely allowed to get their own snacks. In fact, I encourage them to when they are able. I'm not a maid!

Things that they can get or make for themselves: juice, milk, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, bananas, nuts, raisins, bananas, apples, ice cream, and my 7-year-old can make his own scrambled eggs, start to finish (although I have to turn on and off the stove) and does a darn good job!
