Best iron supplement for children?

I am concerned that DD is anemic. I haven't actually had her blood levels tested, but she has shown the symptoms of it off and on for a while. I am also very prone to anemia, so it would not surprise me.

DD will NOT eat meat. We are not big meat eaters (maybe 4 times a month??) but even when we have it she will not touch it. I do try to cook more beans and other things like that, as well as give nutritious snacks etc. We eat mostly whole foods and some raw.

I've tried the blackstrap molasess and she hates that too. I've used Floradix for myself in the past, and love it, but I'm concerned about the cost and the fact that it's not for kids. I was wondering if there was something similar out there for a cheaper price.

Thanks so much!!!

Curious too!

What are the symptoms in children, BTW? I am concerned my 9 yr old is anemic. Her diet is very poor though, very heavy in grains, etc.

Well, I went ahead and got a generic brand of Floradix called Herbal Iron that is $17 at my HFS instead of $35-37 like the Floradix is. https://www.mothernature.com/p/Natur...oz/103331.html It has dosing for children as well.

Several days after starting the iron DD is a different person!!

As for symptoms, my dd is 9 as well and here's what hers were:

1. Headaches...a lot of times I could put these off on not enough water, the hot temperatures here, loud noise, lack of sleep etc. That may have been the case some of the time, but she hasn't had one headache since starting the iron 2 weeks ago!

2. Dizziness

3. Tired A LOT! Wanted to lay around, just didn't have the energy she should for how healthily we eat etc.

4. Sometimes she would "shake". This would concern me and I started worrying she had something really wrong. But then I remembered I'd have the same problem at times when I was anemic.

5. Bruising more than she should.

The most obvious ones to me were the fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. The bruising and shaking weren't as often or obvious. It started with headaches and fatigue and the rest came later.

Do you cook in iron cookware? It can be a big help and there was a study... I think in Haiti... in which their food was cooked in iron cookware (and this is like, thin soup and gruel, basically, because these were poor children) and it reduced anemia in the target group by a substantial amount.

I know we don't eat a lot of meat at all--well, DH does and I eat some but the kids don't eat much--but apparently we all have great iron, LOL!

I'm not opposed to supplementation, but in the long run, iron cookware can really help esp. if she doesn't care for meat. Good luck.
