Pee-Smelling Diapers!

Thread Starter
Hi all, I have been washing my BG 3.0s on Cold w/ a little Charlie's Soap detergent (1/4 rec amount), then doing a Hot wash (1/4 rec ammount) and then a cold rinse.

I line dry the dipes and tumble-dry the inserts... But my diapers still smell like PEE! I don't get it... It just seems like they smell very urine-y after washing and I can't get rid of the odor.

I've tried 2 diff detergents. Anyone have had this problem and know of any suggestions/solution...?

Thanks!!

I don't use Charlies soap but I am pretty sure that is one of the ones where you are supposed to use the full recommended amount. It sounds like your diapers just aren't getting clean, I would use more soap and see if that helps.

I would use more soap..or your could try more rinses if you think you are using enough soap. Have you tried an OxyClean Free soak to disinfect your diapers? That might help.

I would do your cold wash with no detergent, then do 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent with your hot wash. It sounds like they're not getting clean enough.

I have this same problem and it's driving me crazy. The diapers smell bad even right out of the wash. I've been using 7th Generation detergent.. Can't use Oxyclean because even Oxyclean Baby makes DD's excema flare up really, really badly. She has very sensitive skin and I'm leery of switching detergents since I know she is okay with 7th Gen. Also looking for suggestions.. !

Have you tried a vinegar rinse? I use white vinegar with my FB and that helps a lot.

is there any particular reason you're putting the detergent in the cold wash? Cold water is REALLY not very good at dissolving detergents...if I were you I would do the cold wash, then add the detergent to the hot, then rinse twice. And maybe try using more detergent...although I never liked Charlies. I've been washing mine in Tide Original and having good results

Hmm, 7th Generation is not the most highly recommended CD detergent. Which one are you using? 7th Gen. Baby? Free and Clear?

If they're stinky right out of the wash, they're not clean. You may be having some detergent build-up issues that are preventing the diapers from getting clean enough.

Here's a helpful site: http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.co...entchoices.htm

I use Allen's and have not had any detergent or stink issues, even in my front loader.

I use the full scoop of Charlies and a two hot washes. Charlie's is what saved my dipes after an unfortunate bought of washing with 7th Generation. I have also used Allen's w/o any trouble, but that involved adding Calgon to the wash. Charlie's has been very straight forward and works really well with my hard water.
