Homebirth question: requires only a moment of your time.

For those of you who have either had or are planning to have a homebirth, does your midwife come to you for appointments or do you go to her? Just wondering which is more common. Thanks!

From what I have read, it varies a lot. But, it does seem like you go to the midwive more often than the midwive coming to you.

What part of PA are you in?

In my area I beleive all of them you go to the MW, but they all do one home visit at the end that clears you for the homebirth, basically.

I wish mine came to me, but alas, no such luck!

I went to the midwife until the 38 week visit, for that visit and the subsequent weekly ones (DS was born at 41w 1D), she came to me. I liked it a lot, not so much because it was convenient, but because it helped me become comfortable with her in my space, not as a guest but as a friend.

We have one definite home visit and the rest are usually office; however, if one of the midwives is in the area and has time, they will sometimes call and ask if I want my appointment at the house in their free time. Last time I got to do this three times, so that was great. I hope it happens again this time!

I went to my midwife for every appt except the last one before birth.

My midwife comes to me, and on Saturdays so my husband can be present without taking time off of work. I don't have a car to use during the week and all the midwives I interviewed were about an hour away, so it was very important to me that she come to my home for appointments.

We travel to our midwife, she will come for one appointment at 36 weeks to get familiar with our house and will do two postpartum visits (one at 24 hrs and one at 2-3 days postpartum).

I go to my MW until 36 weeks. For every visit after, she comes to my house

My MW did all home visits until just recently. In June she sent out an email that she would be doing some visits from a borrowed office from now on. She sees a lot of people in a pretty wide area with bad traffic, and was often quite late for our home appts., so I think it was a good idea for her. She does still do several home visits for everyone. I'm not sure if she alternates or how she's doing it; because I was close to the end of my pregnancy and had several vacations coming up when she made the change, I've not had an exact pattern.

We live in a very rural part of Texas and people are very spread out, usually by no less than 30 miles but most of the time by 100-120 miles. With my mw's pratice still being so new and clients very spread out she does all home visits the entire pregnancy for everyone. We try to arrange if we are in town to have an appt that day also but the standard is that she comes to our home. It's VERY nice and really teh first time I had ever heard of a mw coming to you. When living in Dallas/Fort Worth and the area being so saturated with midwives you always go to them for appts.

I'm going to my mw's office. She shares it with some other birthy people (doulas, massage therapists and another mw). With my other hbs, I also went to them.

One in home visit at 36/37 weeks. Everything else in office.

With all but my second baby I have gone into my midwife's clinic for prenatal visits.

With my second the midwifery practice was renovating their clinic, so they came to me. Otherwise, standard practice here is that you get 1 home appointment during your pregnancy and 2 weeks of home visits postpartum. Then you go into the clinic for appointments until your 6 week discharge appt.

My last MW, in a different town, came to me. All the MW I interviewed in that area came to the client.

My current MW does not come to my home, I must go to her. That seems to be the norm up here as I only saw one MW that even gave you the option of home prenatals.

I go to her. Of course, she lives really far away from me, too, but you go to her even if you're in town where she lives.
