Hello everyone! I have been reading through this thread for awhile now and I really appreciate everything I have learned from all of you. I figured it was time to introduce myself and jump into the convo :)
I am currently pregnant with my 3rd child. My first was born still just shy of 16 wks. I had very minor breast changes in that pregnancy and no issues with engorgement after his death. But my OB said it was early enough that it wasn't unusual. My second son is now 17 months and we are still nursing in spite of a micro supply. I had very minimal breast changes during pregnancy, but at the time chalked it up to back to back pregnancies assuming there wasn't much left to change. But then after his birth he was never content, never had a poo diaper and only had 1 wet a day. He nursed constantly but lost too much weight. We had to begin formula supplements by day 5. It took awhile to figure out how much formula he needed but he was basically taking as much formula as an exclusively formula baby even though he was nursing both sides every 2 hours around the clock. I tried pumping, herbs (goats rue, fenugreek, Maxi Milk, blessed thistle, alfalfa, mothers milk tea), eating oatmeal and even Reglan. I ordered domperidone but by the time it arrived, I had decided to quit the herbs and just nurse as much as my baby wanted to. Nothing really helped. I was absolutely heartbroken. I am questioning IGT. My breasts don't appear completely 'normal' but they also don't seem to fit the description of IGT. I had an unmedicated, vaginal delivery without complication. But 6 days postpartum I had a secondary hemorhage that is believed to have been caused by retained placental fragments. I had a d&c and needed a transfusion. At this point I don't know how much of my issue was caused by primary factors such as possible IGT and what was caused by my postpartum issues. At 6wks postpartum I had my thyroid checked and my T3 was very low. It was checked again a few weeks later and was normal. In that time, I stopped taking fenugreek. I actually believe the fenugreek caused an imbalance in my thyroid. My levels were normal a few months after that so they stayed fine without the herbs. Sheehans syndrome has been questioned and ruled out by multiple visits to an endocrinologist.
I am currently expecting my 3rd child this spring. I am working with an IBCLC who specializes in situations like mine. So far we are still planning our strategy. My progesterone has been checked and is fine, I have never been diagnosed pcos and really don't have any of the symptoms. I have had a lot more breast tenderness and sensitivity this time but no noticible increase in size. My 17 month old is still nursing but is down to about once a day and only for a few minutes. I think this pregnancy has dried up what little was there and he is losing interest.
Any thoughts? Anyone else unable to use fenugreek?
