I have found the W.S. Reading List to be helpful. Though I think it's one of those books that only one friend in a circle needs to own--that it can be passed around.
I think it's most useful around 8-9 when they really start reading on their own and become voracious and you need ideas that are inline with your (Waldorf education) perspective--not to offend but we weren't going to read the Disney fairy stories or Magic Treehouse.
For the younger ages, it's more of what you mentioned that you'd be familiar with the better picture books and the big books of tales.
I feel like it could be updated though. I wish it had more classic/older books from the '40s and older that are being forgotten (Milly Molly Mandy, Jenny and the Cat Club, Happy Little Family, etc.etc.)
We haven't gotten to Books for the Journey yet.
