How do I talk to my OB about home birth? - Page 2

Amanda, thank you. I know that homebirth will come up when I call to let them know that the baby came (and not at the hospital). And as nice as a doc as he is, I am thinking that I may ask my family doc if I can resume my yearly womanly check ups with him after the baby comes. It is just such a hassle to drive into UCLA, even if it is not that often.

Now I just have to figure out when and how to talk to the family doc about our plans. He will be the doc for the new baby (just like for the rest of the family), and I want to make sure he is okay with us just coming to the office for the newborn screenings, instead of him coming into the hospital. I am sure he won't mind that part, since he lives pretty far from the hospital.

GYNE Care from Midwives & Dual Care

Very interesting discussion ladies! I have heard of someone who used a midwife in the hospital as a backup for homebirth. The CNM knew and was fine with that. She did get dual care as she has some concerns. Can't remember what. I am in the Chicago area. That is the only one I have heard of. I too wish that the medical community was more educated about homebirth. I am involved in trying to get CPM licensing for the non nurse midwives. One of the issues is continuity of care. One of the best kept secrets is that most births need no medical assistance at all. The medical society is trying to hold on to it's monopoly. This does not serve the highest good. Now that 26 states have CPM licensing I'm hoping that the rest of the states will follow suit. It is so interesting that even women who have not, nor will ever have, children get that it is a freedom of choice issue. Good luck to anyone brave enough to try to educate the medical community. Good to see that some are showing signs of knowing the truth about birth! Keep in mind that CNM's offer all gyne care too!

I went with the CNM who worked with a very natural minded OB, and like you saw a ton of red flags. No way would he have done shadow care. I asked him how long I could labor at home and he said "not at all" that he had seen the accidental home births and went on and on about tears so bad the clitoris could not be saved and wounds inpacted with fesces, etc.

When I DID have my HB, and went to the ER a week later for a 104 fever, he was on call and refused to come in to treat me because I chose a HB. When they told me to follow up with him, his staff was RUDE to me and told me because I was a HOME BIRTH 'transfer' they would see me once and ONLY once....despite me being their patient for 6 months of my pregnancy and only left when my CNM decided she was not catching babies for a while and I would have to see the OB. I canceled the follow up, and followed up with a NP in a practice my MW reccomended.

I also had a ton more interventions when I was there than I was comfortable with because whenever I declined something with my MW, she and the OB bullied me into it. By the time I transfered in the 3rd tri I had had something like 13 ultrasounds, and the only test I was allowed to decline was the AFP because I was 29.
