The January 2011 baby sex/gender thread! - Page 5

I had my US on Thursday, everything looks good but the hospital won't tell you the sex of the baby

So we're going to go to a private ultrasound place just to find out, because I really want to know! I'm guessing girl.. hopefully we'll know for sure on Monday!

Wow! I've never heard of that before. Do you know why?

Liability and CYA. Some places are afraid they will get sued if they tell you the wrong flavor. I know for years many Army hospitals would not tell you.

Well, the way it works here is your doctor sends in a referral for an ultrasound, and you go to whichever hospital has the first availability. Only one hospital in the city will tell you the sex, and I'm not really sure why. The hospital I went to is Catholic, and I used to think they were the only ones that couldn't tell you. It's annoying, because our ultrasounds are covered by our provincial health plan, but now we have to go pay $100 out of pocket to go to another place just to find out the gender. I just can't wait though

Also, if you aren't in the US there are some countries where it's illegal due to infanticide. I had never heard that for liability purposes though-- the gender is the least risky thing that they are checking for!

How it was explained to me is that someone was told one gender so they spent a fortune on gender specific clothing and the baby was of the opposite gender so they raised a huge stink and threatened a lawsuit so they made it a blanket policy at all Army hospitals that they could not tell the gender. I am not sure the accuracy of that since I never had maternity care on base, but I was told that several times over by several people. I think it was changed some years back, but I know from word of mouth in 2005 at Ft. Carson Colorado they would not tell you the gender and the first time I heard about it was at Ft Hood Texas in the late 90's by no less than three different women... if you wanted to know the gender you drove an hour away to Austin to the radiology college and they would tell you.

Add us to team PINK!

We had our ultrasound today and it's a girl!

We usually don't find out the sex, so it was kind of odd now to know it...a big deal to us but obviously not the ultrasound tech who had the personality of a rock.

Keep me in the "waiting 'til birth" list but ...

At the u/s yesterday, DH and I both think we saw boy parts. DH has probably never seen an ultrasound in his life, so you know it must have been pretty honkin' obvious for him to pick up on it. He's actually the one that brought it up after the appointment, so he was quite sure of what he saw. To me it seemed like a textbook under/between the legs shot with a tiny little baby penis + testicles.

Of course, neither of us really knows what we were looking at. Maybe it was the umbilical cord. We'll still be surprised at the birth, but this sort of maybe knowing is going to drive me nuts.

Bah!

I was seen by a military hospital for my last pregnancy and they made me sign a form saying that gender predictions are not 100% accurate, they weren't liable for wrong guesses, etc. and that the purpose of the u/s was to check the baby, not predict gender. I wanted a surprise anyways, but I suppose they wanted to cover their butts.

Wow! I had never heard of that!

We found out about our little *GIRL* yesterday. I'm so excited-- most excited I've been all pregnancy. She was absolutely gorgeous, and the US looked like a baby. *sigh*.

We were going to wait but we changed our minds and found out we are having a baby boy

Add us to the boy list as well!! I totally felt girl until about a week and a half ago when this baby started moving nonstop. He is literally all over the place...we could all see it during the ultrasound. DH and DS are both really excited to have another boy in the house and I must admit, I am liking the idea of having a house full of boys!
