k12 question - testing?

just curious - I'm in TX, K12 here doesn't start until 3rd {no idea why} so just curious for now since we're in K.

Is there a way to exempt from the state testing when you're doing K12 in Texas?

The program sounds great, and it would really help our finances to have things provided, but I don't agree with state testing at all and DD is not the type to do well on testing.

i thought that in Texas you did not have to do any testing if you are h/sing?

You don't - but k12 is a virtual public school, so you are subject to testing according to their website.

k12 will sell its program to individual families, so that it's a cyberschool that you're doing which is separate from the public school system. We asked about it last year and the cost was about $5,000/year.

If you enroll via the public school route then you're subject to the same test expectations that other public school students are subject to. They have a "Study Island" program that the kids start doing to prepare for the tests and become comfortable with the test taking process - I think in my state that starts in the second grade although the tests aren't until the third grade.

We like our k12 program - we aren't subject to the tests 'til 3rd grade. We'll decide whether we want to stay with the public school version when we get to the testing year; at that point we will likely be transitioning to a more standard homeschool curriculum because the "teaching to the test" is one of our major concerns about public school (but right now we're enjoying the free computer and free materials).

Um, even if you are in public school, can you not just opt out of the testing? That is what I would do.
