Carraway seeds = fennel seeds??

Are these two the same or interchangeable? I am wanting to make NT sauerkraut and wondering if i need to get the seeds or if my fennel will suffice?

Thanks!

They're not the same thing, but as long as you like the taste of the fennel seeds then go for it! Fennel seeds are the ones you sometimes get in pizza crust, caraway seeds are the ones you sometimes get on rye bread.

Well hmmm. I like them both but I want my kraut to taste like kraut you know. I really thought they were the same! They look a lot alike. I think I'll check the store for the caraway though. I don't want to ruin my first attempt! But if I don't find them I might just go ahead because i really want to get the process started so I have some fermented veggie for next week.

Thank you!

caraway is traditional, but people are making all kinds of innovative spicing combos, and if it tastes yummy pre-ferment, it will taste better after usually.
