Breech at 20 weeks, should I be concerned?

Ok, I think the answer is no. But breech means a high chance of another c-section and THAT freaks me out. So, please help me not freak out right now.

I told DH that I would still want to go into labor naturally and give the baby a chance to turn. He was ok with that.

I know about the spinning babies site but is that even worth doing right now? I feel like I need to get this baby to turn ASAP. Is there anything else I could do right now to get this baby head down?

you have at LEAST 10 more weeks before you should even start worrying about position.

baby can move around in there so much right now that while baby was breech at the ultrasound, they could be transverse or vertex now... or just flipping all over the place.

there ARE tips on spinning babies you can follow to help assure that baby will likely go head down (like not slouching or what-not... others would know better) most are good tips to be doing anyway to help you not hurt so much.

I'm 23 weeks and the baby is still doing flips. If he was ever breech or head down he didn't stay in that position for more than a few hours!

I asked my mw this at last week's appointment. She said they don't worry until 32-34 weeks.

That said, I do think it's a good idea to practice good posture, no lounging or slouching, and do cat-cow once a day. All these things help encourage the baby to choose the head down position when the time is right.

I read a while back - and can't find the link ANYWHERE; I've been looking for weeks - about a midwife who encourages her patients to start the good posture/good sitting techniques ASAP. She has apparently only rarely had a breech or posterier baby amongst her patients. One of the keys I remember is sitting with knees wide and below hip level, pelvis neutral and back straight. IIRC, this encourages the uterine ligaments to be loose, and the pelvis, too. This is the way you would sit on a properly sized birth ball or one of those kneeling chairs.

No. It's completely fine.

Babies usually don't start to turn head-down until around 30 weeks. Most practitioners don't worry until a few weeks after that.

If you want to do some exercises for optimal positioning check out spinningbabies.com But honestly, there's absolutely no reason to expect your baby to be breach at term based on how s/he is positioned at 20 weeks.

the biggest influence on the position the baby will eventually take is the anatomy of your pelvis. and it is true, they dont settle into position until about 33 wks or so, and even right up to the very end, it is possible to flip. i've seen ladies come in at 37 wks for versions after an u/s the day before and the baby flipped over night! there are positions to encourage head down, so that's never a bad idea if you want to do that sort of thing, but i definitely would not worry about it.

you're fine for now, mama.

FWIW, my midwife doesn't even want to TELL me what position the babe is in till 36 weeks, because she said it's useless to worry myself about it until then.

don't stress but there are things you can do now to encourage a proper birth position.
