UTI - blood? UPDATE - STILL HURTING AFTER ANTIBIOTICS

My 4.5 year old has a UTI. She started antibiotics last night but obviously it hasn't taken effect yet. She just went to the bathroom and there was a spot of blood on the toilet paper - is this normal for a UTI or should I be concerned?

ETA: Okay she did the week of antibiotics and she is still having problems! She took the last dose Wednesday morning. She is better somewhat, she isn't peeing every 5 minutes, but she is still peeing at least every 1/2 hour and seems to have a lot of urgency. This is not normal for her. Do we go back to the doctor again? I thought the antibiotics would clear it up. Is it possible that she needs more antibiotics or for an infection to linger even after antibiotics?

No one has any input on this?

I just got over a bad UTI that included bloody urine. Sorry TMI.

Did they take a urine sample? Is it being grown?

Personally, I would run it by your HCP. It did take about 2 days of ABX for me to stop spotting.

also, did they catheterize to get the urine to do the test? that can also cause blood (at least it did for me).

Yes, they took a sample and said she has a bladder infection. They also sent it away to be cultured. No, they didn't do a catheter, she peed in a cup (which she thought was hilarious!)

So far it has only been the one time and she is down to peeing every 30-45 minutes this afternoon as opposed to yesterday when she was peeing literally every 5 minutes.

My dd had several confirmed UTi's when she was little and we were able to treat them naturally w/o antibiotics by using D-manose and homeopathic Cantharis 30c. I figured I'd let you know for future reference or if she is still in significant pain during this one (the cantharis should really help the pain and pretty quickly too). The D-manose is actually a form of sugar that happens to attract the e-coli bacteria (which is the cause of about 90% of UTI's) and traps it and flushes it out of the system. Since it's sweet, it's easy to have the kiddos take it. I would typically mix it into some apple sauce or yogourt. I got mine from Vitacost.com and it included cranberry extract in it too as a bonus

Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks for the tips on healing it naturally but for me personally I don't feel comfortable with that. I have a history of bladder problems, including interstitial cystitis and kidney infections so for me this is one of those times that I feel antibiotics are in order. It is only the second time in her life she has had them (first was at 9 months when she had bronchitis) so we definitely don't overuse them.

I totally understand. We all have to weigh the risks & the benefits and decide what's best! Do keep in mind that you can use the homeopathic cantharis in conjunction with the antibiotics to relieve any burning pain that she might be experiencing. Hope it heals up quickly. Take care!

ugh...i don't know what is going on and am thinking of calling the dr. tomorrow to see if this is "normal"

Is there a antibiotic-resistant uti or something???

She may need a stronger antibiotic. My experience is they give a broad spectrum to treat everything. It doesn't always work. Does she have a fever or any other symptoms? I would take her in for sure and insist on further testing.

Sometimes the bacteria will cling to the lining on the bladder and not clear up with abx. I don't know what they gave her maybe Macrobid..sometimes if it is resistant they will give Cipro. Since I have a history of UTI's I always tell them to just put me on the Cipro instead because mine reoccur. Since your dd is so young I would think that Macrobid would work. Is she good about wiping front to back with one swipe? Maybe some wipes in the bathroom can help too..sometimes the kids wipe in a hurry or wear their underwear backwards

Another option is just put a squeeze bottle by the toilet full of water that she can just rinse off after..this helps with burning too. I found out my dd was using rose scented bath soap and not rinsing well after we took her to the dr.

There have been times when my IC flared so bad that I drank a spoon of baking soda in a glass of water to ease the burn. I know this is not a remedy , but can help for comfort.

Kids don't usually drink enough water and this is tricky with 4.5. You might want to put water in a fancy glass ex. wine glass or crazy straws ect. to entice her to drink.

Sorry your babe is hurting..hope she heals up soon!

p.s yes I have had bleeding with uti and that is usually when it went too long before the abx..I always rush to dr. now .

I've only had one UTI and it was super painful with a fair amount of visible blood. Usually UTIs just show up as microscopic blood from the urine test, but it is not uncommon for there to be visible blood as well. My son has had 2 UTIs and it takes about 24 hours for the antibiotics to make a noticeable difference in the pain levels. That being said, I am an ultrasound tech and scan MANY people with UTIs where the first, second and sometimes third rounds of antibiotics don't work.

Did they make sure the abx they first gave her wasn't resistant to the bacteria?

I would have her re-tested. Doesn't sound like the abx did it's job or wasn't appropriate for the bacteria.

I am sorry about your little one. I am newly over a bad UTI myself and it as awful.

Whenever I've had a UTI, I always had to cut out irritating foods while taking the antibiotics. Anything too sweet or too acidic increases the pain and urgency for me. (I have to cut out wine and coffee, doubt your DD drinks too much of those!) But I would steer her clear of juice and other sweet or acidic foods for a few days. (Unsweetened cranberry or cranberry pills being the one exception - this is very evidence-based and may be worth a shot.)

Hope she feels better soon!
