Intense World Theory?

anyone have any thoughts/opinions on this one? How does it change how your treat/handle/deal with autism?

I'm also wondering (as I haven't found any articles on this as of yet) how that relates to disorders like SPD and so forth? would they be considered in the IW theory?

it seems like the idea of the IWT really would thread the different diagnosis into one cohesive idea. like the invisible link.

any thoughts?

I hand't heard of it till this post. I looked it up and it makes a lot of sense to me (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2518049/). Seems to fit for my Auspie sister especially. My DS1 has SPD and everyone who meets him describes him as an "intense" child, lol. Everything does seem to affect him much more than others, onyl he OVER-reacts instead of withdrawing as in ASD. So I definitely think it's possible that IWT also applies to SPD. I'll have to read more...

That's certainly interesting! My son seems to be hyper-sensitive to the emotional climate around him and like many spectrum individuals handling multiple communication inputs (say facial response and nonverbals and verbal response from a partner) is too much it seems. But he's a sensory seeker in life in most ways and the overwhelmed with multiple inputs seems more a processing issue somehow. Interesting. I'll think more on it.

I think what we now call autism we will someday realize is a lot of things with different underying causes that have commonalities. I guess I'm saying my instinct is this might be an explanation for some but not all autistics as I don't think there is one thing that fits all.

well it's not really an explanation so much as a better idea of what it feels like. It doesn't explain WHAT or WHY so much you know? But i do know what you're trying to say.

My SPD daughter is a sensory seeker too. (big time!) but the idea is that autistic (or other similarly diagnosed) individuals seek info on THEIR terms but that they can't handle the plethora of info sent at them. as well as the stimming being about making sensory output to block out too much sensory input. so that really goes in line with the IWT in my mind.
